Labeling others as "energy vampires" can lead to unnecessary negativity, which only serves to lower your vibration and further deplete your own energy.
By acknowledging your emotional responses and bodily sensations, you gain valuable insight into who heals you, and who drains you.
Protecting Your Energy By Setting Boundaries
If you've developed a habit of people-pleasing, setting boundaries will feel uncomfortable at first. However, remember that creating healthy boundaries is an essential act of self-care. With practice, you'll discover how empowering boundary setting is.
When you set boundaries you communicate to others what is and isn't acceptable if they want to remain in your energy. Boundaries should be communicated with firmness and respect. Hopefully it goes without saying, but do not set boundaries by ghosting, yelling, name calling or shaming another person - that's being toxic.
Example Of Setting A Healthy Boundary:
Let's say you've discovered a person you consider to be a good friend has been gossiping and speaking poorly of you behind your back. You've assessed your emotions and bodily sensations, and have decided that you need to cut the cord on this toxic relationship in order to protect your energy. Here's a healthy way to communicate your boundary without becoming toxic:
"After careful reflection, I've realized that our friendship has become detrimental to my well-being. For the sake of my mental and emotional health, I need to protect my energy and step away from this relationship.
My decision is to prioritize myself by surrounding myself with positive influences. I hold no ill will towards you, but I believe it's best for both of us to move forward separately.
Respectfully give me space and understanding as I focus on self-care and healing. I appreciate the positive memories we shared, but I must prioritize my growth and happiness.
Thank you for understanding. I wish you all the best on your journey."

Toxic boundaries includes manipulative, aggressive, or disrespectful communication that seeks to control or hurt the other person. Here's a few examples of toxic boundary setting for our example above:
- Blaming and Shaming: "You're the reason for all the problems in our friendship. You've ruined everything by being such a two faced friend, and I can't stand being around you anymore."
- Ultimatums: "If you don't change your behavior right now, I'm cutting you out of my life forever."
- Gaslighting: "I never said that. You're just over sensitive"
- Personal Attacks: "You have the IQ of a doorknob, you troll! No wonder nobody likes you."
- Emotional Manipulation: "If you really cared about me, you'd _________ (fill in the blank)"
- Guilt-Tripping: "I can't believe you abandoned me when I needed you the most. I thought you were a real friend."
- Passive-Aggressive Comments: "It's fine. I guess I'm just used to being treated this way."
- Threatening: "I'll make sure you pay for how you've treated me. Nobody treats me that way!"
- Stonewalling: Refusing to communicate or ignoring the other person without any explanation.

The act of "return to sender" should be one of self-care, respect, and compassion. Return to sender is not wishing ill will or bad karma upon another person! Wishing negativity onto another person lowers your vibration and only creates more unnecessary stress and drama.
Return to sender is not about what satisfies your ego. Never return to sender because someone bruised your ego or triggered you, and you want to get back at them. It's about what's best for the evolution of both parties. Remember, we all have shadow work to do, so it's not about blaming or shaming another person for where they are in their journey.

Close your eyes and take a deep breath, centering yourself in the present moment. In your mind's eye, visualize yourself standing in a serene, radiant space surrounded by soft golden light. You are protected and supported in this sacred space.
Suddenly, you notice a figure approaching you, carrying a black bag oozing with thick, murky slime. As they come closer, you recognize the bag is full of their negative energy and unresolved emotions.
With a calm and steady presence, you welcome this person into your space. You acknowledge that everyone carries their burdens, and this bag of negativity is not yours to bear.
As the figure attempts to hand you the black bag, you gently raise your hand, respectfully declining to accept it. You recognize that accepting their negative energy is not helpful for either of you, and it won't bring positive resolution.
With compassion in your heart and a firm but kind tone, you explain to them, "I understand that you are carrying heavy emotions and negative energy, but this bag is yours to hold, not mine. I am returning it to you with love and empathy."
Meditation To Protect And Clear Your Energy
In the following meditation we'll be working with the 4 elements and a representative that I have chosen for each element. Feel free to use the animals or dieties that resonate most deeply with you for this protection ritual:
- Find a quiet and comfortable space. If you are familiar with casting a circle, you can do this now. Otherwise, proceed with the ritual. Place lit candles in the East, North, West, and South, representing the Spirits of Eagle, Phoenix, Whale, and Deer, respectively. The candles should be in a circle, and you are sitting in the center of the circle. The East - Eagle Spirit
- Stand or sit comfortably, facing the East where the Eagle candle is placed.
