What Is A Sigil?
The word "sigil" comes from the Latin word "sigillum," which means "seal" or "sign." It originally referred to a seal or emblem that was used to authenticate a document. However, over time the meaning of the word expanded to include mystical symbols that hold immense power as manifestation tools, and that's what we'll be exploring today.
Practitioners of modern occultism use sigil magic to manifest their intentions. You can create sigils for absolutely anything you want to manifest. Prosperity, protection, health, wisdom, love and abundance are all popular themes for sigil creation. It's totally up to you. What's so compelling about sigils is that each one is personal to its creator. And, it's this personalization that imbues them with their magical properties.
Sigils can be created using a variety of techniques; we'll cover a few of the more popular methods in this article. Despite their differences, all of these techniques share a common approach: leveraging the creative process of sigil creation to access the formidable potential of the subconscious mind.
Whether created using pen and paper, or with more elaborate tools such as crystals or pottery, sigils can be tailored to suit the preferences of their practitioner. In this way, sigil making is a deeply personal and empowering practice that allows individuals to connect with their innermost desires and bring them to fruition.

Sigil Making Methods
There's many different time-honored methods that you can use to create a sigil. The most important thing is that you choose a method that resonates with YOU. Here's a few of the more popular ways to create your own power symbol:
- The Austin Osman Spare Method: This method involves writing out a statement of intent and then crossing out all repeating letters and vowels. The remaining letters are then combined to form a sigil. I've have given you an example of how to use this method in the section entitled "How To Make A Sigil" below. There's a further example of this method in my free downloadable PDF.
- The Planetary Square Method: This method involves using a Kamea (magic square) associated with a planet to create a sigil. I've have given you an example of how to use this method in the downloadable PDF that you see above.
- The Wheel Method: The wheel method involves creating a circle divided into sections that represent the letters of the alphabet. You then create a sigil by tracing the letters of your simplified intent on it. Have a look at this article for more information on the wheel method.
- The Rose Cross Method: The Rose Cross method is another way to create sigils using an alphabet wheel with a rose cross in the center. It involves creating a circle divided into sections that represent the letters of the alphabet and a rose cross in the center of the circle. You then create a sigil by tracing the letters of your simplified intent on it. See here for a template of a rose cross wheel.
- The Freehand Method: This method involves simply drawing or doodling a symbol that feels representative of the intention or desire. The resulting symbol is then charged with the intention through visualization or other means.
Types Of Sigils
Sigils can take many different forms, not only in their design but also in their intended use. Here are three different types of sigils:
- Temporary Sigils: A temporary sigil is a sigil that's s created for a specific purpose and then either erased, discarded, or otherwise removed after the purpose has been achieved. This type of sigil is not meant to be permanent, and its energy is typically focused on a specific, short-term goal or intention. Temporary sigils can be made with materials such as chalk, salt, or even food and are usually drawn or created with the intention of being erased or consumed.
- Permanent Sigils: These are designed to be long-lasting, often etched into metal or stone or even tattooed onto the practitioner's skin. They're used for long-term or ongoing intentions and are meant to be a constant reminder of the practitioner's desired outcome.
- Destructible Sigils: A destructible sigil is a sigil that's intentionally destroyed or dismantled as a part of the activation process. This type of sigil is typically created with the intention of releasing or unleashing its energy in a specific way, and the act of destruction is seen as a necessary step in activating the sigil and achieving the desired outcome. For instance, many people like to carve their sigil into a candle with a toothpick. As the candle burns, the sigil releases your intentions into the universe. Or, you can also simply burn your sigil in a safe place as soon as you've activated it.
How Do Sigils Work?
Sigils magic is based on the principles of focused intent, visualization, and the manipulation of the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is the part of the mind that operates below the level of conscious awareness. It's where your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and desires are stored.
When you create a sigil, you begin by focusing your intent on a specific desire or outcome. This process of focusing the intent creates a mental image of the desired outcome, which is then visualized and imbued with energy. The energy of the your intent is then transferred into the sigil, which acts as a symbolic representation of the desired outcome.
The sigil itself acts as a tool to bypass the conscious mind and communicate directly with the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is highly receptive to symbols and images, and it can interpret them in ways that the conscious mind isn't able to. By focusing on the sigil and visualizing the desired outcome, you're able to communicate your intent directly to your subconscious mind.
Once the sigil is charged with the your intent and energy, it's released into the universe to do its work. The idea is that the subconscious mind will work on manifesting the desired outcome, without the conscious mind getting in the way with its inherent doubts and limiting beliefs.
In essence, sigils work by tapping into the power of the subconscious mind to manifest your desires and intentions. By creating a focused intention and using a symbol to communicate with the subconscious mind, you effectively bypass your conscious limitations and allow the universe to work its magic.
To enhance the effectiveness of your sigil, consider the planetary day you make it on.
How To Make A Sigil
The following method is for how to create a sigil using the Austin Osman Spare method.
- Write out your desire in a simple sentence that's phrased in the present tense. For instance, the sigil you see in the photos above is for the intention: "I am protected from negativity." For examples of intention setting, please feel free to look at one of my many articles on affirmations such as "affirmations that will build build self worth." Affirmations are very similar to intentions and the process of creating them is much the same.
- Remove all the vowels from the sentence, leaving only the consonants. Note: I do not count the letter y as a vowel.
- The next step is to remove any repeating letters. In our example, the sentence would become "PCDFNGVY." * see diagram above for further details.
- Next, you'll want to simplify the remaining letters in your sentence by combining or overlapping them to form a unique symbol. This symbol should be something that you feel represents your intention. You can be as creative as you like with this step, experimenting with different combinations of letters, shapes and swirls until you find something that feels right. Add as many embellishments as you like to personalize your sigil. There's no right or wrong way to do this. You can see what I created above on the right. Your sigil will look entirely different. Charging Sigils
Once you've created your sigil, it's time to activate it by charging it with your will. There's numerous sigil charging methods, but here's a few of the more popular ways. Please note, that way you charge your sigil will be tied to the intent you're manifesting.
- Visualization: Visualize the sigil in your mind's eye and imagine it becoming more and more vibrant and powerful with each breath you take. You can also imagine the sigil radiating energy out into the universe and attracting the desired outcome.
- Meditation: Meditate on the sigil, focusing your attention on its shape and the intention behind it. As you meditate, allow your energy and intention to flow into the sigil, charging it with your personal power.
- Ritual: Incorporate your sigil into a ritual or ceremony that's designed to amplify its effects. This could involve lighting candles, burning incense, or performing specific actions or movements that are associated with your intention.
- Physical Actions: Perform physical actions that are associated with your intention while focusing on the sigil. For example, if your intention is to manifest abundance, you might perform a dance or movement that represents abundance while holding the sigil in your hand. Chanting, singing or playing sacred sounds are all possible ways to activate your sigil.
Finally, after you've charged the sigil with your energy, you can release it into the universe. You can release your sigil into the universe by burning it, burying it in the ground, or simply keeping it in a safe place where it won't be disturbed.
The Benefits Of Sigil Making
- Clarity and Focus: Sigil making helps you gain clarity about your intentions. This process can help you get clear about what you truly desire, as opposed to what you think you want. The two are very different. Distilling your intentions is the most important part of the sigil making process, and it's also the most difficult.

By creating a symbol charged with your energy and intent, you're signaling to the universe that you're open to receiving it.
