Juices and smoothies are my favorite go-to breakfast option. I've posted lots of smoothie recipes that are among the most popular recipes on Daily Dish - (Chia Banana Boost Smoothie, anyone?)

But, I don't post juice recipes, because not everyone owns a juicer. So, I decided to share my favorite green detox juice, and to give you two ways to make it. One version is for those who have a juicer. The second version is for anyone that has a blender. The juicer version will give you a thinner juice, while the blender version produces something closer to a smoothie. Both are equally delicious!

    ๐Ÿ›’Ingredients

    • Celery: So, if you haven't heard about the benefits of celery juice, you've probably been living under a rock! This green detox juice wouldn't be a real detox juice without the veg the Medical Medium turned into an superstar.
    • Cucumber: Cucumbers are mostly water, so they add the wonderful cooling and hydrating element.
    • Green Apple: Green apples are what add sweetness to this detox juice. If you don't mind an earthy veggie taste, you can even use only one or two apples. Apples are rich in dietary fiber, particularly pectin, as well as vitamin C, potassium and various antioxidants.
    • Spinach: Spinach is such a nutrient-rich leafy green. It contains vitamin A, C, and K, as well as minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium. It also has loads of antioxidants.
    • Ginger: I love the subtle warmth and zing that ginger adds.
    • Lemon Juice: Lemon juice keeps the apples from oxidizing and turning brown, plus it adds a kick of Vitamin C
    • Water or Coconut Water: I normally use coconut water, but you can just use normal water as well. I'd recommend filtered water.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸณHow To Make Green Detox Juice

    Juicer Instructions

    1. Wash all the vegetables and fruits thoroughly.
    2. Feed the celery, cucumber, green apples, spinach leaves, and peeled ginger through the juicer according to your juicer's instructions.
    3. If your juicer separates the juice and pulp, you can mix them together in a pitcher to combine the flavors and maintain the fiber content, if you wish.
    4. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into the pitcher with the green juice. Mix well to incorporate the lemon juice.
    5. Pour your green detox juice into glasses!

    Blender Instructions

    1. Wash the fruits and veggies.
    2. Peel the cucumber, apples and ginger. Chop the cucumber, apple and celery into bite-sized pieces.
    3. In a blender, combine the celery, peeled cucumber, green apples, spinach leaves, and peeled ginger.
    4. Add a the water or coconut water.
    5. Blend the ingredients on high speed until you achieve a smooth consistency. It will look more like a smoothie than a juice. If you want a thinner juice, simply add more water.
    6. Pour your green detox smoothie into glasses and serve immediately.

    Top Tip

If you're making your green detox juice with a juicer, transfer it to a blender with a handful of ice for a green detox slushie. It's perfect in summer!

๐Ÿ’กOther Veggies To Add To Green Juice

    1. Kale: Packed with nutrients, kale adds a slightly bitter taste and a vibrant green color.
    2. Swiss Chard: With its colorful stems and mild flavor, Swiss chard is a nutritious addition.
    3. Zucchini: A mild-tasting vegetable that contributes to a smooth texture in smoothies.
    4. Broccoli: Rich in antioxidants, broccoli adds a unique flavor and nutritional boost. Check out my broccoli smoothie recipe. I promise you'll love it!
    5. Parsley: A potent herb that not only enhances flavor but also provides additional vitamins.Storage
    6. Collard Greens: Nutrient-dense and slightly bitter, collard greens add depth. You will want to add a few apples or dates to knock the bitter edge down a bit.
    7. Romaine Lettuce: Light and crisp, romaine lettuce is a great base for green juices.
    8. Arugula: Adds a peppery kick to the mix and is rich in vitamins and minerals.
    9. Cilantro: Offers a fresh earthy flavor.

    โ„๏ธMake Ahead Storage Instructions

After preparing your green detox juice, it's important to store it properly to maintain its freshness and nutritional benefits. Transfer the juice to an airtight container or glass bottle, filling it to the top to minimize air exposure. Do not use a plastic container. Refrigerate the juice immediately to slow down oxidation, and if possible, choose a dark container to protect it from light. For optimal flavor and nutrient retention, consume the green juice within 24 to 48 hours.

You can also freeze the juice in ice cube trays and transfer the frozen cubes to a sealed bag. Defrost in the fridge. When you're ready to drink it, shake the juice well before drinking.

While convenient for busy schedules, remember that the health benefits of green juice are most pronounced when consumed relatively soon after preparation.

    ๐Ÿ™‹Juice Detox FAQs

What does green detox juice do to your body?

Green juices offer a multitude of benefits for the body. Rich in immune-boosting vitamins A and C, they strengthen the immune system, while the high vitamin C content combats fatigue and provides sustained energy. Additionally, the presence of vitamin A contributes to healthy skin, and the fiber content may aid digestion and support a healthy weight loss plan when incorporated into a balanced diet.

When should I take green detox juice?

For optimal nutrient absorption, I recommend drinking green detox juice on an empty stomach. When your stomach is empty the nutrients are more efficiently absorbed by the body.

Is it OK to drink green juice every day?

While green juice can be a beneficial addition to a balanced diet, it's crucial to consume it in moderation. Green vegetables, being rich in oxalic acid, can indeed bind to minerals and potentially interfere with their absorption in the digestive tract. Excessive consumption of oxalate-rich foods may contribute to the formation of kidney stones in susceptible individuals. Therefore, varying the types of vegetables in your green juice and balancing it with other nutrient sources is key to reaping the benefits without exceeding recommended levels of oxalate intake (Reference: Lincoln University.)
