Ingredients, Substitutions And Tips
- Bread: I'm using sourdough, but any bread will do. For more information on bread's suitability for a vegan diet, check out my article, Is Bread Vegan? This recipe can be made gluten free by simply using your favorite gluten free bread.
- Olive Oil: I think that tomato avocado toast is best if the bread has a delightful crunch to it. That's why I recommend toasting your bread in the oven with a swipe of olive oil on each side. Having said that, if you're in a rush, or want to save on the calories, please feel free to toast your bread in the toaster.
- Garlic: You'd be surprised what a flavor booster garlic can be with a just a little rub from a broken clove.
- Avocado: Choose a ripe avocado. A ripe avocado should have a dark skin. It should feel slightly soft when gently pressed, but not mushy.
- Lime Juice: We'll be using lime juice to keep your avocado from browning. It also adds tangy, zesty flavor that's a great complement to avocado.
- Tomatoes: I'm using cherry tomatoes because they're generally sweeter than larger varieties of tomatoes. However, if you want to use a regular tomato, that's fine too.
- Cilantro: You'll need a good handful of cilantro for the cilantro lime dressing.
- Dairy Free Yogurt: Use your favorite brand of dairy free/ vegan yogurt.
- Salt & Pepper: Seasoning is a must here!

Frequently Asked Questions
To peel an avocado, follow these simple steps:
1. Cut the avocado lengthwise: Using a sharp knife, cut through the avocado lengthwise around the seed, and gently twist the two halves in opposite directions to separate them.
2. Remove the seed: Hold the half with the seed firmly on a cutting board, and gently tap the seed with the blade of the knife. Twist the knife to remove the seed.
3. Score the flesh: With the skin still on, use a knife to gently score the flesh of the avocado in a crosshatch pattern, being careful not to cut through the skin.
4. Peel the skin: Use your fingers to gently peel the skin away from the flesh, starting from the end opposite the stem. The skin should come away easily, leaving you with the soft, ripe avocado flesh.
5. Discard the skin and seed: Discard the skin and seed, and use the avocado flesh as desired.
Avocados can turn brown quickly when exposed to air, which can make them less visually appealing, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they're no longer safe to eat. If you want to keep your avocado from turning brown, here are a few things you can do:
1. Use lemon or lime juice: The acid in lemon or lime juice can help slow down the browning process.
2. Cover it with plastic wrap: Covering the avocado with plastic wrap or putting it in an airtight container can help reduce its exposure to air, which can slow down the browning process.
3. Keep the pit in the avocado: The pit in the avocado can help slow down the browning process. If you only use half of the avocado, keep the pit in the other half and cover it with plastic wrap or put it in an airtight container.
4. Store it in the refrigerator: Keeping the avocado in the refrigerator can also help slow down the browning process. Make sure to wrap the avocado in plastic wrap or put it in an airtight container before storing it in the fridge.
Avocados are a nutrient-dense food and are a good source of many important vitamins and minerals. Minerals that you'll find in avocados include magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, and zinc. Avocados are also rich in antioxidants, which can help protect against cellular damage.
