If you're a fan of Tropical Smoothie Cafe, you know that their smoothies are delicious. But, did you know that you can easily make your own versions at home? I've created several copycat recipes for some of Tropical Smoothie Cafe's most popular smoothies, and they've become some of the most loved recipes on my site.
From the nutrient-packed Chia Banana Boost Tropical Smoothie to the refreshing, veggie-filled Island Green Tropical Smoothie, these recipes have been a hit with my readers. That's why today, I'm excited to share another delicious copycat recipe with you: The Beach Bum Tropical Smoothie.
This smoothie is the perfect blend of sweet bananas, juicy strawberries, rich dark chocolate, and creamy almond milk. And, the great thing about making your smoothie at home is that you can easily customize it. I've given you my favorite customization below.
๐Ingredients
- Bananas: The riper the better!
- Frozen Strawberries: You only need a handful of strawberries to make the Beach Bum smoothie. Say, 6-7 strawberries per smoothie. If you don't have frozen strawberries, it's ok to use fresh ones. Just be sure to add a little bit more ice.
- Almond Milk: Almond milk is my plant-based milk of choice, but really you can use any milk you have on hand.
- Dark Chocolate: You'll about 2 squares of dark chocolate per smoothie. For information on the vegan status of various brands of dark chocolate, see this post: Are Chocolate Chips Vegan?. Tropical smoothie cafe uses Ghirardelli dark chocolate.
- Ice: You'll also need a cup of ice.
- Optional Maple Syrup or Sugar: If your bananas are ripe enough, you shouldn't need sugar, but Tropical Smoothie Cafe does use sugar, so it's up to you. I think it's great without adding sugar.
๐จโ๐ณHow To Make A Beach Bum Tropical Smoothie
- Melt the chocolate in a small microwave prove dish. You only need to melt it for about 30 seconds.
- Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
Top Tip
Add the ingredients to the blender in this order:
- Almond Milk: Pour the almond milk into the blender first. This will help create a vortex and allow the blender to pull down the other ingredients more easily.
- Bananas: Add the bananas next. Sliced or broken-up bananas will blend more easily than whole bananas.
- Melted Chocolate: Pour the melted chocolate into the blender. Adding it after the bananas will help prevent it from hardening when it comes into contact with the cold ingredients.
- Frozen Strawberries: Add the frozen strawberries on top of the other ingredients. This will help push the other ingredients down towards the blades.
- Ice: Add the ice last. By placing the ice on top, the blender will be able to crush it more effectively as it gets pulled down into the already-blending mixture.

One of the great things about making your smoothies at home, is that you can easily customize them. Here's a few of my favorite ways to customize the Beach Bum Tropical Smoothie:
- Add a scoop of protein powder for an extra boost of nutrients and to make it more filling.
- Substitute the almond milk with coconut milk for a richer, more tropical flavor.
- Add a handful of spinach or kale for a hidden serving of greens without altering the taste significantly.
- Swap the dark chocolate for a spoonful of cocoa powder for a lower-calorie option.
- Add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon for an extra depth of flavor.
โฐMake Ahead Instructions
To make this Beach Bum Tropical Smoothie ahead of time, simply blend all the ingredients together, then pour the smoothie into ice cube trays and freeze.
When you're ready to drink your smoothie, just pop a few cubes into your blender, add a splash of almond milk, and blend until smooth.
