If you live in the UK, you are undoubtedly familiar with Jammie Dodger's biscuits. These jam sandwiches are iconic biscuits that most Brits fondly associate with their childhood. Think packed school lunches and birthday parties.
But, are Jammie Dodgers vegan? The short answer is yes!
Made by Burton's Biscuits, Jammie Dodgers have undergone a few recipe changes over the years.
In 2016 British vegans were outraged when Burton's biscuits changed the recipe to include milk protein. However, in 2020 they removed the milk protein from the recipe, making them suitable for vegans and allergy sufferers. Hooray!
Here's a list of ingredients in Jammie Dodgers:

Making Homemade Vegan Jammie Dodgers
While it's easy to go to the shops and buy a packet of vegan Jammie Dodgers, why not make a batch at home?
When you bake biscuits at home you're in control of what goes into them. So, no long words in a list of ingredients - meaning no additives or preservatives. And, my recipe only contains six simple ingredients that you might already have in your pantry. Plus, these biscuits are so much fun to make!
Ingredients
You only need six simple ingredients to make homemade vegan Jammie Dodgers.
- Flour: I used plain white flour, but if you're looking for gluten free and vegan Jammie Dodgers, you can substitute your favorite gluten free flour blend.
- Soy Milk: I used soy milk in this recipe, but it will work with any plant based milk.
- Vanilla Extract: Choose the best quality vanilla extract you can afford. It really makes a difference to the flavor.
- Sugar: Caster sugar is the best choice for this recipe.
- Strawberry Or Raspberry Jam: Check to make sure that your jam is vegan friendly. Some jams are made using gelatin, which isn't vegan friendly. You can also use raspberry jam, or any other flavor your prefer.
- Vegan Butter: Use vegan butter from a block, not a tub.
How To Make Homemade Vegan Jammie Dodgers
- Using a hand mixer, cream together the vegan butter and sugar.
- Add the soy milk and vanilla and mix until everything is well combined.
- Tip in the flour and mix until the dough starts to hold together.
- Using your hands, bring the dough together into a ball and knead it a few times.
- Dust a large piece of parchment paper with flour and roll the dough out to 5 mm thickness.
- Transfer the dough to a baking sheet and put it in the fridge to chill for 15 minutes.
- Using a flower shaped biscuit cutter, cut out 16 biscuits - 8 for the top, and 8 for the bottom of your jammy dodgers. Cut a hole out of 8 of the biscuits - these will be the biscuits on top of the jam. You can use a cake decorating tip for this.
- If you have extra dough, shape it into a ball, roll it out, and cut out more biscuits.
- Return the cut out biscuits to the fridge to chill for another 15 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375 F (190 C).
- Bake your biscuits for 12-15 minutes. Remove them from the oven and transfer to a cooling rack. Allow them to cool fully.
- Spread the 8 bottom biscuits with jam, and top with the 8 biscuits that have a hole cut out of them.
- Enjoy your vegan Jammie Dodgers with a cup of tea!
