Fancy a fish supper but not sure where to go? We've done the legwork (and the mouthwork) for you!

We rated each restaurant on taste, value, freshness, and atmosphere to bring you this definitive ranking.

    The Codfather Rules The Sea

The Codfather swept us off our feet with perfectly battered cod that was crispy outside and flaky inside. Their chips were golden wonders – chunky yet fluffy.

What really sets them apart? The homemade tartar sauce with capers and dill. Their seaside-themed restaurants make you feel like you're dining by the coast, even in Birmingham!

Loch Fyne's Premium Offerings Fall Flat

Once the crown jewel of seafood dining, Loch Fyne has lost its sparkle. Prices have soared while portion sizes shrink faster than a tide going out.

Our mussels arrived lukewarm, and the signature oysters lacked that fresh sea taste. The posh surroundings can't make up for disappointing food and sluggish service that left us checking our watches.

    Harry Ramsden's, The Nostalgic Classic

Walking into Harry Ramsden's feels like stepping back in time. Their classic fish and chips recipe hasn't changed much since 1928, and that's actually a good thing!

The batter has that satisfying crunch, while the fish inside stays moist. Not the fanciest place on our list, but their consistency across branches earns them major points. The mushy peas are properly minty too.

    Rockfish Delivers Coastal Excellence

Founder Mitch Tonks knows his fish, and it shows! Rockfish sources directly from morning markets, meaning what's on your plate was swimming just hours earlier.

Each branch specializes in local catches – the Brixham restaurant served us the sweetest Devon crab. Their unlimited chips policy is dangerously tempting, and the relaxed coastal vibe makes every meal feel like a holiday treat.

Poppies, Retro Charm Meets Quality Fish

Staff in 1950s uniforms serve fish and chips wrapped in fake newspaper at Poppies. Gimmicky? Maybe. Delicious? Absolutely!

The cod was so fresh it practically winked at us. Their homemade pickled onions pack a punch that cuts through the richness perfectly. The jukebox playing oldies creates a fun atmosphere that had us lingering long after our plates were clean.

Captain's Table, Sinking Ship Of Disappointment

Captain's Table needs to abandon ship. The frozen fish had that telltale rubbery texture, while the chips were so greasy they left puddles on the plate.

The nautical decor tries hard but feels about as authentic as a plastic pirate hat. Worst of all was the musty smell that greeted us – not the fresh sea breeze you'd hope for in a seafood joint. Save your money and sail elsewhere.

    Seafresh, The Hidden Gem

Tucked away in Victoria, Seafresh doesn't look special from outside. Step inside and you'll discover why locals queue up nightly.

Greek-Cypriot owners add Mediterranean flair to British classics – try the calamari with lemon aioli! Their fish is coated in a lighter batter than most competitors, letting the quality shine through. Family-run warmth means you're treated like a regular, even on your first visit.

    Fishworks, Style Over Substance

Fishworks looks impressive with its fishmonger counter where you can select your dinner. The execution, however, left us cold as yesterday's catch.

Our sea bass was overcooked to the point of dryness, and the advertised "hand-cut" chips appeared suspiciously uniform. The elegant white tablecloths and hefty prices create expectations the kitchen simply can't meet. Nice wine list, though!

Sutton & Sons, Hipster Heaven For Fish Lovers

Sutton & Sons brings fish and chips into the 21st century without losing what makes it special. Their beer batter uses local craft brews, creating a distinctively light, crispy coating.

Sides go beyond mushy peas – the fennel and apple slaw was a revelation! They even offer vegan "fish" made from banana blossom. The East London branches have that cool-without-trying vibe, making dinner here a proper treat.

    Rick Stein's, Celebrity Chef Quality

Rick Stein's restaurants live up to the famous chef's reputation. The seafood platter we sampled in Padstow was a masterclass in simple cooking that respects the ingredients.

Fresh oysters tasted like pure ocean, while the grilled sardines had that perfect char. Yes, you'll pay more than your local chippy, but the waterfront locations and knowledgeable staff make it worthwhile for special occasions. Book well ahead!

    Deep Blue, Middle-of-the-Road Mediocrity

Deep Blue sits firmly in the "not bad, not great" category. Their fish portions are generous, but the batter lacks that satisfying crunch we crave.

The chips were decent enough, if a bit pale. Service moves at a reasonable pace, and prices won't break the bank. If you're hungry and it's convenient, you'll leave satisfied – just don't expect to be writing home about your meal.

The Scallop Shell Is Fresh Catch Excellence

Bath's Scallop Shell proves inland restaurants can serve seafood that rivals coastal spots. Their open kitchen shows off the day's catch on ice, building anticipation before you even order.

The pan-fried hake with brown butter was flawless – crisp skin, tender flesh. Chips are triple-cooked to perfection. The bright, airy space fills with happy chatter from locals who know they're onto a good thing.

    Wetherby's Traditional Fish & Chips, Old-School Charm

Wetherby's has been frying since 1969, and that experience shows. The no-nonsense approach focuses on getting the basics spot-on rather than fancy gimmicks.

Our cod came in a golden batter that stayed crispy right to the last bite. The chips had that perfect balance between fluffy inside and crisp outside. The formica tables and cash-only policy might seem dated, but the food is timeless.

Catch Fish & Chips Sustainable Surprise

Catch puts eco-credentials front and center, using MSC-certified fish and compostable packaging. We were skeptical – does sustainable mean sacrificing flavor?

Not here! Their haddock was meaty and fresh, with a light, crisp batter. The chips are skin-on for extra flavor and less waste. Their homemade curry sauce has a proper kick too. The modern, bright shops make waiting for your order a pleasure.

The Crab & Lobster Pricey But Worth It

    © SquareMeal

The Crab & Lobster sits at the premium end of our list. Their seafood platters aren't cheap, but blimey, they're good!

Hand-picked crab meat was sweet and plentiful, while the grilled lobster came with garlic butter that had us fighting over the last drop. The coastal locations offer stunning views as you dine. Their cocktail menu deserves special mention – the seaweed martini was oddly addictive.
