We Tested Jams From Lidl, Sainsbury's, Aldi, And More – The Cheapest One Beat Hartley's

Breakfast wouldn't be the same without a dollop of sweet, fruity jam on your toast. But does paying more for a premium brand like Hartley's actually get you a tastier spread?

We decided to put eight popular jams to the test, comparing supermarket own-brands against the market leader.

Our mission was simple: find out if cheaper options could match or even beat the quality of the pricier Hartley's jam that costs nearly double.

    Hartley's

The premium contender in our lineup comes with a hefty price tag compared to the others. Hartley's boasts a rich heritage dating back to 1871, which might explain the premium pricing.

Opening the jar reveals a glossy appearance that certainly looks appealing. The consistency is just right – not too runny, not too firm – and spreads beautifully on toast without tearing it.

Taste-wise, it offers a balanced sweetness with recognisable raspberry chunks, though we noticed it wasn't dramatically different from some cheaper alternatives. The texture is pleasantly smooth with just enough bits to remind you it's made from real fruit.

    Aldi

Surprise winner! Aldi's budget-friendly jam delivered an unexpectedly premium experience that had our tasters reaching for seconds. The vibrant colour and glossy finish looked remarkably similar to the Hartley's offering.

What truly impressed us was the generous amount of raspberry pieces throughout. Each spoonful contained identifiable fruit bits that gave it an authentic homemade quality. The sweetness level struck the perfect balance – not cloying or artificial tasting.

For less than a pound, this jam outperformed competitors costing nearly twice as much. The texture remained consistent throughout, spreading easily without dripping off toast. A genuine bargain that doesn't compromise on flavour.

    Tesco

Tesco's offering comes in a straightforward glass jar with a simple label – nothing fancy, just honest jam at a wallet-friendly price. Popping the lid reveals a slightly darker red colour than some competitors, with a pleasant fruity aroma that promises good things.

The consistency is on the firmer side, which means it stays put on your toast rather than sliding off. We noticed fewer whole fruit pieces compared to our winner, but the raspberry flavour still comes through nicely.

A slight tartness balances the sweetness, making this a good all-rounder for breakfast or afternoon tea. Not quite as impressive as our top pick, but certainly worth considering at this price point.

    Asda

Asda's jam arrived in a smart-looking jar with a modern label design that wouldn't look out of place next to pricier brands. The colour leans toward a brighter, almost artificially vibrant colour that catches the eye immediately.

Texture-wise, it's slightly looser than others we tested, which makes it particularly easy to spread even on cold toast. The sweetness level is notably higher than most competitors, which might appeal to those with a sweet tooth but felt a bit overwhelming to some of our testers.

While lacking the natural fruit chunks found in our winner, it delivers a consistent raspberry flavour throughout. A decent option that performs adequately for everyday breakfast needs without breaking the bank.

    Lidl

The German discount retailer brings a continental touch to the humble jam jar with their offering. Cracking open the lid reveals a pleasing deep ruby colour and a consistency that's noticeably thicker than most competitors.

What stood out immediately was the pronounced raspberry aroma – stronger and more authentic than many others in our test. The jam contains visible seeds and small fruit pieces that give it a homemade quality that belies its budget price tag.

Taste-wise, it strikes an excellent balance between sweetness and fruit flavour, with a slightly more intense raspberry taste than most. The thicker consistency means it stays perfectly on your toast or scone without dripping. A strong contender that nearly claimed our top spot.

    Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's entry comes in an elegant jar that wouldn't look out of place at a posh breakfast table. The jam itself has a beautiful jewel-like clarity that catches the light appealingly when spread.

Texture enthusiasts will appreciate the smooth, almost silky consistency that glides effortlessly across toast. Unlike some competitors, this one doesn't have many visible fruit pieces, instead offering a more uniform experience. The flavour is pleasantly sweet with a subtle raspberry note that doesn't overwhelm.

While not as fruit-forward as our winner, this jam would pair beautifully with delicate pastries or scones where you don't want chunks getting in the way. A refined option that performs well above its price point for those who prefer a smoother jam experience.

    Morrisons

Just a penny more expensive than the other supermarket options, Morrisons' jam arrives in a sturdy jar with a traditional-looking label. The first thing we noticed was its slightly darker colour and glossy sheen that suggested a good set.

Consistency-wise, it sits comfortably in the middle range – neither too firm nor too runny. There's a pleasant amount of fruit pieces distributed throughout, though they're on the smaller side compared to our winner. The flavour profile leans toward the sweeter end of the spectrum, with a recognisable raspberry taste.

A hint of tartness in the finish prevents it from becoming cloying. Overall, it's a reliable performer that doesn't particularly stand out but delivers exactly what you'd expect from a good raspberry jam.

    The Final Thought

Our jam journey revealed something rather surprising – price doesn't necessarily dictate quality when it comes to this breakfast staple. The clear standout was Aldi's offering at just 89p, which outperformed the premium-priced Hartley's in both flavour and texture.

All the supermarket options we tested cost around half the price of the branded leader, yet several matched or exceeded it in quality. Lidl came a very close second to Aldi, with both discount retailers proving they can compete with the big names.

The verdict? Save yourself 81p per jar and opt for Aldi's jam – your toast (and wallet) will thank you. Sometimes the cheapest option really is the sweetest deal!
