Remember those classic dinners that graced British tables in decades past? The ones mum would whip up after school or gran would serve on special Sundays?

These iconic meals defined home cooking from the 1950s through the 1980s, creating food memories that still make our mouths water today.

Sausages peeking through golden Yorkshire pudding batter - what's not to love? This quirky-named British classic combined two favourites in one gloriously simple dish.

Families would gather round as the crisp-edged batter rose dramatically in the oven, creating the perfect vessel for rich onion gravy.

    2. Prawn Cocktail

The sophisticated starter that no 70s dinner party could do without! Plump prawns draped over the edge of a glass dish, smothered in that distinctive pink Marie Rose sauce.

A bed of shredded iceberg lettuce waited below, with a wedge of lemon and sprinkle of paprika crowning this retro masterpiece.

    3. Spam Fritters

School dinner legends! Slices of this famous tinned meat coated in batter and deep-fried until golden. Many a child of the 60s and 70s would rush to the front of the dinner queue when these crispy delights appeared.

Served with chips and mushy peas, they were a proper treat despite their humble origins.

    4. Coronation Chicken

Born for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, this curry-flavoured cold chicken salad became a staple at garden parties and buffets nationwide. Bright yellow from the curry powder and studded with sultanas and almonds, it brought exotic flavours to post-war Britain.

Mums would make sandwiches with the leftovers for school lunches the next day.

    5. Angel Delight

The magical dessert that transformed from powder to mousse with just a whisk and some milk! Strawberry was the nation's favourite, but butterscotch had its devoted fans too.

Children would hover impatiently while mum whisked, then popped it in the fridge to set. Some fancy versions even featured tinned mandarin segments on top!

    6. Beef Stroganoff

The height of dinner party sophistication in the 1970s! Strips of beef in a creamy mushroom sauce with a splash of brandy for that grown-up touch.

Hostesses would serve it with rice or those fancy butter noodles, feeling terribly continental. The recipe usually came from a Marguerite Patten cookbook or a women's magazine cut-out.

    7. Arctic Roll

That magical combination of vanilla ice cream wrapped in sponge cake with a layer of jam that made teatime special! Birds Eye's version was the ultimate freezer treasure.

Mums would slice it while still frozen, revealing that perfect spiral. The trick was waiting just long enough for it to soften slightly before diving in with your spoon.

    8. Chicken Kiev

The first ready meal that didn't feel like cheating! That moment when your knife pierced the crispy coating and garlic butter oozed dramatically onto the plate was pure theatre.

Marks & Spencer made them famous in the 1980s, transforming them from restaurant fare to midweek treat. Smart dinner hosts would serve them with 'saute potatoes' and peas.

    9. Black Forest Gateau

The dessert that dominated celebrations throughout the 1970s and 80s! Layers of chocolate sponge, cream, cherries and kirsch created a towering masterpiece.

Those chocolate curls on top were the epitome of sophistication. Birthday girls would beam as it arrived at the table, often purchased from the local bakery or the freezer section of Bejam.

    10. Scotch Eggs

Picnic perfection wrapped in sausage meat! These portable protein bombs were essential for day trips to the seaside or watching cricket on the village green.

The best ones had that orange-yellow yolk in the middle. Mums would make them the night before, wrapping each one carefully in greaseproof paper before packing them in the picnic basket.

    11. Vol-Au-Vents

Nothing said 'fancy buffet' in the 1970s like these puff pastry cases filled with creamy chicken or prawn mixture! Hostesses would arrange them on doily-covered plates, feeling terribly continental.

The ready-made cases from the supermarket were a godsend, though ambitious cooks might attempt making their own for special occasions.

    12. Steak Diane

The flambéed showstopper of 1970s restaurants! Thin steaks cooked tableside in a rich mushroom and brandy sauce, often dramatically set alight by waiters in bow ties.

Ambitious home cooks would recreate it for dinner parties, though often without the flaming finale. The sauce was mopped up with chunky chips or, for the sophisticated, a side of dauphinoise potatoes.

    13. Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

A teatime favourite with those distinctive rings of tinned pineapple and glacé cherries baked into a caramelised top. The big reveal as mum flipped it onto a plate was always a moment of domestic drama!

School cookery classes taught generations of children how to make this sticky sweet treat, often served warm with custard or evaporated milk.

    14. Cheese Fondue

The ultimate 1970s dinner party centrepiece! That bubbling pot of molten cheese, white wine and kirsch with long forks for dipping chunks of crusty bread.

Hosts would proudly display their fondue set (usually a wedding present) while guests navigated the social minefield of double-dipping. Dropping your bread meant buying a round of drinks, according to the rules.

    15. Liver And Onions

The marmite of retro dinners – you either loved it or loathed it! Slices of liver fried with mountains of sweet, soft onions was a budget-friendly staple.

Dad would probably ask for extra gravy, while children might try hiding pieces under their mashed potato. School dinner versions were notoriously tough, but gran's homemade recipe was often surprisingly delicious.

    16. Coq Au Vin

The ultimate 'impress the neighbours' dish of the 1970s! Chicken pieces slowly simmered in red wine with bacon, mushrooms and tiny onions.

Inspired by watching Fanny Cradock on telly, home cooks would spend hours preparing this French classic. The rich purple-hued sauce was perfect for soaking up with crusty bread from the newfangled local delicatessen.

    17. Baked Alaska

The magical dessert that defied physics – hot meringue outside, ice cream inside! Dinner party guests would gasp as this scientific marvel arrived at the table.

Creating one successfully earned serious bragging rights among 1970s hostesses. The brave might even attempt the flambéed version, though many a dining room witnessed the disappointment of melted ice cream puddles.

    18. Boiled Ham And Parsley Sauce

Sunday teatime classic! A joint of ham boiled until tender, served with creamy parsley sauce and boiled potatoes. The leftover meat would feature in sandwiches all week.

Gran would save the cooking liquid for pea and ham soup, wasting nothing. The sauce came from a Bisto packet for busy mums, though traditionalists made it from scratch with real butter.
