Britain's love affair with the humble sandwich dates back to the 18th century when the Earl of Sandwich first requested meat between slices of bread.

Today, these portable meals remain a national treasure, with old-school sandwich shops keeping traditional methods alive while adding their own special touches.

From London's historic delis to seaside spots serving freshly-caught crab, these establishments offer a taste of authentic British food culture that fast-food chains simply can't match.

    1. Paul Rothe & Son, London's Family-Run Time Capsule

Stepping into Paul Rothe & Son feels like traveling back to 1900 when this family business first opened its doors in Marylebone. Glass jars of pickles and preserves line wooden shelves while the menu remains gloriously unchanged for decades.

The coronation chicken sandwich here is legendary – creamy, perfectly spiced, and served on pillowy-soft bread. Current owner Stephen represents the fourth generation of Rothes behind the counter, making each sandwich with the same care his great-grandfather once did.

The tiny café area invites lingering conversations over tea served in proper china cups. This isn't just lunch – it's living history with crusts cut off.

    2. Scotti's Snack Bar, The East End Institution

For over 50 years, Scotti's has been feeding hungry Londoners from its unassuming spot in Clerkenwell. The queue often stretches down the street – locals know that waiting is simply part of the experience.

Famous for their enormous Italian-influenced sandwiches, the meatball marinara sub has achieved cult status. Each creation comes wrapped in paper, dripping with sauce, and priced remarkably fairly for central London.

The walls are plastered with faded photos of satisfied customers and visiting celebrities. Cash only, no frills, and absolutely no substitutions – Scotti's doesn't compromise on tradition, and that's precisely why people keep coming back.

    3. Max's Sandwich Shop, The Late-Night Sarnie Revolution

Max's might be the youngest establishment on our list, but it's already achieved legendary status among London's sandwich connoisseurs. Hidden away in Stroud Green, this place turns the humble sandwich into something approaching art.

The signature 'Ham, Egg 'n' Chips' sandwich combines slow-cooked ham hock, fried egg, shoe string fries and piccalilli in a glorious mess between focaccia. Owner Max Halley believes a proper sandwich should be "a three-course meal in your hand."

Open late with craft beers on tap, the buzzy atmosphere feels more like a pub than a café. Max's proves that sandwiches aren't just lunch – they're a proper night out.

    4. Monty's Deli, A Slice of Jewish Heritage

What began as a market stall is now one of London's most cherished sandwich institutions. Monty's brings authentic Jewish deli traditions to Hoxton with sandwiches that would make a New Yorker feel right at home.

Their hand-carved salt beef and pastrami are cured and smoked in-house using recipes passed down through generations. The 'Meshuggener' combines both meats with swiss cheese, mustard and sauerkraut – a towering achievement that requires both hands and several napkins.

Freshly-baked bagels and traditional chicken soup complete the experience. Founder Mark Ogus named the place after his grandfather, whose spirit lives on in every perfectly-stacked Reuben.

    5. The Bearded Baker, Bristol's Artisanal Bread Haven

Tucked away on a cobbled Bristol side street, The Bearded Baker has turned sandwich-making into a craft worthy of the city's artistic reputation. Owner Tom starts baking sourdough at 4am daily, using organic flour from a local mill.

The menu changes with the seasons, but their signature beetroot-cured salmon with dill cream cheese on dark rye has permanent status. Everything is sourced within 30 miles when possible – even the butter is hand-churned by a farmer just outside the city.

The tiny shop offers just three tables, so most customers take their prizes to nearby Castle Park. Arrive before noon or risk finding only crumbs and disappointment.

    6. Hells Kitchen Deli, Brighton's Rock 'n' Roll Sandwich Joint

Named after the owner's love of New York and heavy metal, this Brighton sandwich shop has attitude to spare. Black walls covered in band posters create the backdrop for some seriously rebellious sandwich creations.

Their 'Smoke on the Water' features house-smoked brisket with bourbon BBQ sauce and jalapeño slaw – a flavour explosion that's converted many a lunchtime regular. Vegetarians aren't forgotten either, with plant-based options that pack just as much punch as their meaty counterparts.

Weekend queues form early as hungover beach-goers seek salvation between two slices of locally-baked bread. The staff know most customers by name and sandwich preference – a proper neighbourhood institution with added volume.

    7. Kracklinjoint, Newcastle's Pork Paradise

As the name suggests, this Newcastle institution specialises in one thing – perfect crackling-topped pork sandwiches that have Geordies queuing around the block. The tiny shop in Grainger Market has been serving the same signature sandwich since 1978.

Slow-roasted local pork is hand-carved before your eyes, topped with crackling that shatters satisfyingly with each bite. The only choices you'll need to make are bread type (white or brown) and sauce (apple or mustard – though regulars know to ask for both).

The no-nonsense approach extends to the décor – plastic chairs, formica tables, and absolutely no pretensions. Just possibly the most perfect pork sandwich in Britain.

    8. Wally's Delicatessen, Cardiff's Continental Corner

Wally's has been bringing European deli traditions to Cardiff since 1947. The shop feels like a treasure trove of imported goods – shelves stacked with exotic mustards, pickles and preserves from floor to ceiling.

Their sandwich counter offers over 20 varieties of ham and 30 cheeses, all available in combinations that would make a continental food lover weep with joy. The 'Welsh Dragon' combines local cured ham, Caerphilly cheese and leek chutney – a patriotic nod to their Cardiff home.

The smell alone is worth the visit – a heady mix of cured meats, strong cheese and freshly baked bread. Take your sandwich to nearby Bute Park for an impromptu picnic, Welsh weather permitting.

    9. Fresh From The Sea, Cornwall's Seafood Sandwich Shack

Husband-and-wife team Calum and Tracey run this tiny fisherman's hut in Port Isaac where the 'catch-to-sandwich' time can often be measured in hours. Calum heads out in his boat at dawn while Tracey prepares the shop for the day's customers.

Their crab sandwich has achieved nationwide fame – sweet, hand-picked Cornish crab meat on brown bread with just a squeeze of lemon and a whisper of black pepper. No mayonnaise, no fancy additions – just the freshest seafood imaginable.

The location adds to the charm, perched above the harbour where you can watch fishing boats bringing in tomorrow's lunch. Just be prepared to eat quickly – the seagulls are as fond of these sandwiches as the humans.

    10. Sayers The Bakers, Liverpool's Pastry Pioneers

No list of British sandwich institutions would be complete without mentioning Sayers – the North West's oldest bakery chain dating back to 1912. While modern branches have updated their look, the recipes remain gloriously unchanged.

Their meat and potato pasty-inspired sandwich combines two Northern comfort foods in one handheld package. Generations of Liverpudlians have grown up on their steak bakes and sausage rolls, creating a nostalgic connection that keeps customers loyal.

The smell of fresh baking still wafts onto the street each morning, drawing in workers for breakfast barms (that's 'rolls' to non-northerners). For many, Sayers represents the taste of home – familiar, unpretentious and reliably delicious.
