We Tried Multiple British Fish And Chips Chains – Number 1 Left Us Speechless

There's nothing more British than tucking into a proper portion of fish and chips. From coastal favourites to city centre staples, we embarked on a mouth-watering journey across the UK to sample the nation's most popular chippies.

Armed with empty stomachs and high expectations, we rated everything from the crispness of the batter to the fluffiness of the chips – all to crown Britain's ultimate fish and chips champion.

    10. Mother Hubbard's

Mother Hubbard's, a staple in the UK’s fish and chips scene, delivers a hearty and reliable meal that has earned a loyal following. Known for its generous portions and crispy, golden batter, Mother Hubbard's offers a no-frills approach to traditional fish and chips.

While the food is satisfying and consistently good, it may not offer the same innovative or refined flavors as some of the more upscale chains.

Still, for those craving classic, straightforward fish and chips, Mother Hubbard’s remains a go-to choice for many.

    9. Fish 'N' Chick'n

Don't be fooled by the no-frills exterior – this Birmingham institution serves some of the most generous portions we encountered. The diverse menu reflects the city's multicultural heritage, offering everything from traditional cod to peri-peri chicken.

The fish arrives in a distinctively orange-hued batter – the result of a secret spice blend that delivers a subtle warmth rather than heat. Chips are proper Midlands style – chunky, crisp and served in mountainous portions that challenge even the heartiest appetite.

Value for money is exceptional here. Our massive cod, chips and sides cost significantly less than smaller portions elsewhere. A proper working-class hero of a chip shop.

    8. Poppies Fish & Chips

Stepping into Poppies feels like time-travelling to 1950s East London. Staff in retro uniforms, vintage jukeboxes, and newspaper-wrapped takeaways create an atmosphere that's as much about nostalgia as food.

Founded by Pat 'Poppie' Newland, who began his fish and chip career in 1952, this place takes tradition seriously. The haddock comes in a golden, bubble-filled batter that shatters beautifully when cut. Chips are hand-cut daily from British potatoes and fried to perfection.

The homemade pickled onions and gherkins add a tangy counterpoint to the rich fish. A genuine London experience that lives up to the considerable hype.

    7. Rockfish

Celebrity chef Mitch Tonks has created something special with his Rockfish chain across Devon and Dorset. The bright, nautical-themed restaurants feel more upmarket than your average chippy without losing the casual vibe.

Sustainability is front and centre here – each day's menu tells you exactly which boats caught your fish. We tried the MSC-certified cod, which came in a light, crisp batter that complemented rather than dominated the fish. The unlimited chips policy (yes, really!) means you'll never leave hungry.

Their homemade tartare sauce contains capers, gherkins and fresh herbs – a cut above the competition. Prices reflect the premium experience.

    6. Harry Ramsden's

Britain's most famous fish and chip chain began as a single shop in Guiseley, West Yorkshire in 1928. Today, Harry Ramsden's restaurants dot the country, offering a consistent if somewhat commercial experience.

The cod portion was generous and flaky, though the batter lacked the character of independent shops. Chips were uniformly decent – crisp outside and fluffy within. Their signature mushy peas had good texture but needed seasoning.

What Harry's lacks in artisanal charm, it makes up for in reliability. You'll never have a terrible meal here, but neither will you have a transcendent one. Perfect for families seeking a safe bet.

    5. The Magpie Café

Housed in a distinctive black and white building overlooking Whitby harbour, The Magpie Café enjoys legendary status among fish and chip aficionados. Their menu stretches far beyond the basics, offering everything from traditional cod to exotic seafood platters.

The signature cod comes in a robust, amber-coloured batter that audibly crunches with each bite. Chips are double-fried for extra crispness, while their homemade tartare sauce deserves its own award.

Be warned – success means serious queues, especially during summer. The wait can stretch to an hour, though the staff manage expectations brilliantly with regular updates and friendly banter.

    4. Anstruther Fish Bar

Royal approval doesn't come easily, but Anstruther Fish Bar in Fife has served both the late Queen and Prince William. The queue stretching down the street is your first clue about this place's reputation.

Haddock is the star here – locally caught and coated in a batter that's somehow both substantial and delicate. The chips are proper Scottish style – slightly thicker and wonderfully potato-y. Their secret weapon? Homemade brown sauce that perfectly complements the fish.

Be prepared to wait, especially during summer months. The tiny seating area means most visitors enjoy their meal overlooking the picturesque harbour.

    3. The Fisherman's Wife

Commanding stunning views across Whitby harbour, The Fisherman's Wife has been a Yorkshire institution for decades. Their gluten-free batter option immediately caught our attention – a rarity in traditional chip shops.

The haddock was meaty and succulent, while the chips struck that perfect balance between fluffy and crisp. A standout feature was their homemade mushy peas, vibrant green and seasoned with fresh mint.

Service felt rushed during peak hours, and portions weren't as generous as some competitors. Still, the quality ingredients and that magnificent coastal view make this spot worth visiting when in Whitby.

    2. Fisherman’s Pier Seafood

Fisherman’s Pier Seafood, a beloved chain in the UK, offers a classic take on fish and chips, serving fresh, sustainably sourced seafood. Known for its crispy batter and perfectly cooked fish, it’s a favorite for both locals and visitors.

While their fish and chips are solid and flavorful, some may feel that it doesn't quite stand out compared to the more innovative and unique offerings from other chains.

Nonetheless, for a straightforward, dependable fish and chips meal, Fisherman’s Pier remains a solid choice.

    1. The Golden Hind

The Golden Hind in Marylebone has been a cherished institution since 1914, renowned for its exceptional fish and chips. The fish is consistently fresh, encased in a light, crispy batter that complements the tender, flaky interior.

Accompanied by hand-cut, golden fries and traditional mushy peas, each bite delivers a comforting taste of British culinary heritage.

The restaurant's warm ambiance and attentive service further enhance the dining experience, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors seeking an authentic taste of London's finest fish and chips.
