Few things bring comfort on a cold day quite like a steaming bowl of soup. Whether you’re thawing out after a frosty walk, nursing a winter sniffle, or simply craving something hearty for tea, soup has a way of making everything feel a bit brighter.

From rich and creamy favourites to bold, spicy creations that wake up your senses, these bowls of warmth are the perfect antidote to grey skies and chilly evenings.

This article is for general informational purposes only. Taste preferences and ingredient availability may vary depending on season and region. Photos are for illustrative purposes only.

    1. Classic Chicken Noodle Soup

Your gran wasn't wrong when she called this liquid gold. Chicken noodle soup has been dubbed 'Jewish penicillin' for good reason – it genuinely helps ease cold symptoms thanks to the anti-inflammatory properties in chicken broth.

The magic happens when tender chicken pieces swim alongside soft noodles, carrots, and celery in a savoury broth that warms you right down to your toes. Most British supermarkets stock decent tinned versions, but homemade is where the real comfort lies.

Pop a batch on the hob and let it simmer whilst the house fills with that unmistakable aroma of home cooking.

    2. Creamy Tomato Basil Soup

Heinz sold over 350 million tins of tomato soup last year in Britain alone, making it our nation's favourite comfort food in a can. But when you fancy something a bit posher, creamy tomato basil takes things up several notches.

Roasted tomatoes blended with fresh basil and a generous splash of cream create a velvety texture that's miles away from the tinned stuff. The sweetness of ripe tomatoes balances beautifully with aromatic basil, whilst cream rounds everything out into pure indulgence.

Pair it with a proper cheese toastie for the ultimate cosy meal.

    3. Hearty Beef And Barley Soup

Barley's been feeding Britons since the Bronze Age, making this one of our oldest comfort foods. This isn't some dainty starter – beef and barley soup is a proper meal in a bowl that'll stick to your ribs on the coldest days.

Chunks of slow-cooked beef become melt-in-your-mouth tender, whilst pearl barley adds a lovely chewy texture and thickens the broth naturally. Root veg like carrots, turnips, and parsnips throw in earthy sweetness that complements the rich, beefy flavour.

One bowl sorts you right out after a long day outdoors.

    4. Spicy Lentil And Vegetable Soup

Lentils pack more protein per pound than a steak, which explains why this veggie number keeps you fuller for longer than you'd expect. Red lentils break down into the broth whilst green ones hold their shape, giving you options depending on texture preference.

Cumin, turmeric, and a kick of chilli transform humble pulses into something properly exciting. Load it up with whatever veg needs using – carrots, celery, spinach, and tomatoes all work brilliantly.

Nutritionists love recommending this one because it ticks every box: filling, nutritious, and dead easy on the wallet too.

    5. Roasted Butternut Squash Soup

Autumn on a spoon, this silky soup turns a humble squash into something restaurant-worthy. Roasting the butternut beforehand caramelises its natural sugars, creating a depth of flavour that boiling just can't match.

Blitz it smooth with a splash of stock and you've got a velvety texture that coats your spoon like liquid velvet. A hint of nutmeg or ginger adds warmth without overpowering the squash's natural sweetness.

Toss some toasted seeds on top for crunch, and you've got yourself a bowl that's both elegant and deeply comforting. Waitrose and Sainsbury's do excellent fresh versions during squash season.

    6. Tuscan White Bean Soup

Italians call this 'ribollita' when it's thick enough to stand a spoon in, but the thinner version warms British kitchens beautifully too. Cannellini beans bring creaminess without any actual cream, making this a lighter option that still feels substantial.

Kale, tomatoes, and garlic simmer together into a broth that tastes like Tuscan sunshine, even on a grey Manchester afternoon. The beans release their starch as they cook, naturally thickening everything into a satisfying consistency.

Drizzle good olive oil over the top and grab some crusty bread for dunking.

    7. French Onion Soup

Caramelising onions properly takes nearly an hour of patient stirring, but that's where the magic happens. What starts as a pile of sharp, eye-watering alliums transforms into sweet, golden strands that form the backbone of this French classic.

Rich beef stock deepens the flavour, whilst a thick layer of melted Gruyere on top creates that iconic stretchy, gooey cheese pull everyone loves. The contrast between savoury broth and sweet onions is absolutely cracking.

Most British pubs serve a decent version these days, though homemade beats them all hands down.

    8. Cream Of Mushroom Soup

Mushrooms contain umami, that mysterious fifth taste that makes everything feel more satisfying and savoury. British woodland mushrooms like chestnuts or even fancy porcini turn this from basic to brilliant, though standard button mushrooms work perfectly fine too.

Sautéing them first in butter releases their moisture and concentrates their earthy flavour before cream smooths everything into liquid luxury. A splash of sherry adds sophistication, whilst fresh thyme brings a herby note that complements the mushrooms beautifully.

This one's proper posh comfort food that feels special enough for guests.

    9. Thai Coconut Chicken Soup

Tom Kha Gai might sound exotic, but British supermarkets now stock all the ingredients you need, making this Thai classic surprisingly accessible. Coconut milk creates a rich, creamy base that's naturally dairy-free, whilst lemongrass, galangal, and lime leaves add those distinctive zingy, citrusy notes.

The balance between creamy, sour, salty, and slightly spicy hits different taste buds all at once in the most brilliant way. Tender chicken and mushrooms make it properly filling.

Tesco and Sainsbury's both sell decent paste versions if you fancy a shortcut on busy weeknights.

    10. Sweet Potato And Carrot Soup

Both sweet potatoes and carrots are absolutely loaded with beta-carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A for healthy eyes and immune function. This vibrant orange soup looks as cheerful as it tastes, bringing a pop of colour to dreary winter days.

The natural sweetness from both veg means you don't need added sugar, though a hint of ginger adds warmth and a subtle kick. Blended smooth, it's got a silky texture that feels indulgent despite being incredibly healthy.

Nutritionists often recommend this one for kids because the sweetness makes vegetables more appealing.
