Roasted potatoes are everything, aren't they? The way they soak up all those savory flavors while staying fluffy on the inside is pure magic. From Marmite roast potatoes to traditional crispy roasties, the humble potato is a culinary chameleon.

You may have never considered roasting potatoes in your crock pot, but it's actually a great idea for a few reasons. First of all, your potatoes will be extra tender and they'll absorb the seasoning much better than if you cooked them directly in the oven.

Secondly, roasted potatoes are one of those dishes that's perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas meals. Cooking them in your crock pot can be done a day in advance. You can then cool the cooked potatoes and store them in the fridge until the big day.

Then, all you have to do is pop them under the broiler to reheat them and to get that crispy exterior that everyone loves in a good roastie! Who's up for saving oven space and having one less dish to prep and look after on the day of a big meal?๐Ÿ™‹

    ๐Ÿ’šReasons You'll Love This Recipe

๐Ÿ’šCrock pot recipes are almost 95% hands-free, which you'll understand is a huge perk if you do a lot of cooking. Throw them in the crock pot, and walk away!

๐Ÿ’šThis is a great make-ahead recipe. Cook the potatoes in your crock pot, let them cool and when you want to serve them, throw them under the broiler.

๐Ÿ’š Roasted Potatoes are the ideal side dish. I've never met someone who didn't love them.

๐Ÿ’šThis recipe only requires 5 simple ingredients, and about 10 minutes hands-on time.

Ingredients needed to make roasted potatoes in the crock pot.
    ingredients

    ๐Ÿ›’Ingredients

    • Potatoes: I suggest using a potato with a waxy texture like a red potato or a Yukon Gold. The waxy texture helps the potatoes hold their shape (see below).
    • Garlic Powder: Garlic powder evenly coats the potatoes, infusing them with a mild garlic flavor as they slow cook.
    • Onion Powder: adds slightly sweet onion flavor that melds well with the other seasonings.
    • Smoked Paprika: Unlike regular paprika, which imparts a sweet and mild flavor, smoked paprika brings a deeper and more complex profile with a subtle smokiness.
    • Thyme: Thyme's aromatic quality really complements the earthiness of the potatoes.
    • Olive Oil: A good quality extra-virgin olive oil will add the best flavor.

๐Ÿ™‹What Are The Best Potatoes For Roasted Potatoes In The Slow Cooker?

Both red and Yukon Gold potatoes have a waxy texture compared to starchy varieties like Russet potatoes. The waxy texture helps the potatoes hold their shape during the slow cooking process, resulting in a firmer and less mushy texture.

Both varieties typically have thin, edible skins, so you don't have to peel them if you prefer to keep the skin on. This not only saves time but also adds nutritional value and gives your roasted appearance that rustic look.

    ๐Ÿ™‹Frequently Asked Questions

    Can you freeze roasted potatoes?

Yes, you can freeze roasted potatoes, but the texture may change slightly upon thawing. To freeze, allow the potatoes to cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag. Reheat them in the oven for better results, as the freezer can affect their original crispiness.

Will potatoes soften on low heat?

Yes, potatoes will soften on low heat, but the process will take longer compared to higher temperatures. Cooking potatoes on low heat allows them to slowly break down and become tender without the risk of overcooking or burning. It's a suitable method for dishes like stews, soups, and slow cooker recipes where a longer cooking time enhances the flavors and textures of the potatoes.

How long does it take for potatoes to soften in a crock pot?

The time it takes for potatoes to soften in a crock pot can vary depending on factors such as the size of the potato pieces, the type of potatoes used, and the specific slow cooker model. In general, on the low setting, it may take around 4-6 hours for potatoes to become tender in a slow cooker. On the high setting, it could take approximately 2-4 hours. It's essential to periodically check the potatoes for doneness and adjust the cooking time as needed based on your specific circumstances.
