10 Protein Bars That Contain More Sugar Than Candy

Protein bars often masquerade as healthy snacks, but many pack more sugar than your favourite sweets!

While they promise muscle-building benefits, some brands might be sabotaging your health goals with shocking amounts of added sugars. Before grabbing that 'nutritious' bar for your post-workout snack, check out these surprising sugar bombs disguised as fitness food.

    1. Clif Bar Chocolate Chip

One of the most popular protein bars on the market actually contains a whopping 21 grams of sugar! That's more than a standard Snickers bar, which has about 20 grams.

The chocolate chip variety is particularly deceiving with its wholesome packaging and athletic branding. Many gym-goers grab these without realizing they're essentially eating dessert.

    2. PowerBar Protein Plus Chocolate Brownie

Marketed heavily to serious athletes, this protein powerhouse hides 23 grams of sugar behind its muscle-building promises. A Kit Kat bar contains just 22 grams of sugar by comparison!

The chocolate brownie flavour tastes dessert-like for good reason. Despite offering 20 grams of protein, the sweetness comes at a nutritional cost many fitness enthusiasts overlook.

    3. MET-Rx Super Cookie Crunch

Fancy a protein bar that packs more sugar than three Oreo cookies? The MET-Rx Super Cookie Crunch delivers a staggering 26 grams of sugar alongside its 32 grams of protein.

Bodybuilders love this brand for its high protein content, but rarely acknowledge the massive sugar hit. It's essentially a candy bar with added protein powder mixed in.

    4. KIND Protein Caramel Nut

KIND bars have a health halo thanks to their visible nuts and transparent packaging. Yet their Protein Caramel Nut variety contains 17 grams of sugar – more than a Milky Way bar!

The caramel drizzle might give away its sweet secret. While the nuts provide healthy fats, the sugar content can trigger the same blood sugar spikes as conventional sweets.

    5. Quest Hero Chocolate Caramel Pecan

Quest's 'Hero' line promises low sugar but delivers something quite different. Their Chocolate Caramel Pecan bar contains sugar alcohols that affect blood sugar similarly to regular sugar.

While the label claims only 4g of sugar, the total carb impact is much higher. Many dieters are fooled by the marketing, not realizing they're essentially eating a candy bar with added protein.

    6. Pure Protein Chocolate Deluxe

Found in nearly every supermarket, Pure Protein bars lure customers with their "high protein, low sugar" claims. The Chocolate Deluxe flavour contains artificial sweeteners plus 15 grams of sugar – more than a Tootsie Roll!

The chocolate coating melts easily, much like candy. Despite 20 grams of protein, the sweeteners can trigger cravings and digestive issues in many people.

    7. Gatorade Recover Protein Bar

Athletes reaching for Gatorade's protein bars might be shocked to learn their Chocolate Chip flavour contains 28 grams of sugar! That's more than a standard Mars bar.

The sports nutrition branding creates a false sense of healthiness. While marketed for recovery, the massive sugar content could actually hinder post-workout recovery by causing inflammation.

    8. ThinkThin Brownie Crunch

Despite its name suggesting weight management, the ThinkThin Brownie Crunch bar packs a surprising sugar punch. While it claims zero sugar on the front, it contains 13g of sugar alcohols.

Sugar alcohols can cause digestive distress and still impact blood sugar. Many people experience the same insulin response as they would from eating regular chocolate, negating the "diet-friendly" marketing.

    9. Grenade Carb Killa Birthday Cake

With its explosive branding and "low carb" promises, Grenade's Birthday Cake flavour contains less actual sugar but 15.5g of polyols (sugar alcohols). That's equivalent to the sugar impact of a Twix bar!

The colourful sprinkles and cake flavouring aren't just for show. Many keto dieters choose this bar without realizing how the sugar alcohols can affect ketosis and cause bloating.

    10. RXBar Chocolate Sea Salt

RXBars pride themselves on simple ingredients, but their Chocolate Sea Salt flavour contains 13 grams of sugar – similar to a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup! The sugar comes from dates rather than added sugar.

Natural sugar still affects your body like regular sugar. The minimalist packaging and "No B.S." slogan convince health-conscious consumers they're making a better choice than conventional sweets.
