    7 Italian Sandwiches Worth Trying

Italy is famous for its food culture, and sandwiches are no exception. From rustic street snacks to café favourites, each sandwich reflects regional flavours and traditions. Exploring these options offers a glimpse into Italy’s everyday food enjoyed well beyond pasta and pizza.

This content is for general information only. Taste, preparation, and availability of sandwiches may vary depending on region and ingredients. Photos are for illustration only.

    1. Piadina Romagnola

Hailing from Emilia-Romagna, this flatbread sandwich dates back to ancient Roman times. The thin, unleavened bread is cooked on a terracotta dish and traditionally filled with prosciutto, soft cheese, and peppery arugula.

Every Italian grandmother has her secret piadina recipe, passed down through generations, with subtle variations in thickness and cooking technique making each version unique.

    2. Porchetta Sandwich

Succulent, herb-infused pork roast, slowly cooked until the skin crackles perfectly, then thinly sliced and tucked into crusty bread. The magic happens when the juices soak into the bread, creating a mouthwatering harmony.

Romans have been enjoying this delicacy since ancient times, typically enhancing it with nothing more than a drizzle of olive oil to let the meat's flavour shine.

    3. Panino Con La Mortadella

Paper-thin slices of Bologna's famous mortadella – that delightfully smooth pork sausage studded with pistachios and peppercorns – layered generously between soft, freshly baked rolls.

Bologna locals often enjoy this as a quick breakfast or midday snack, sometimes adding nothing more than a smear of butter to complement the meat's subtle flavour.

    4. Lampredotto Sandwich

Not for the faint-hearted, this Florentine street food speciality features slow-cooked cow's stomach (the fourth stomach, to be precise) that transforms into something remarkably tender and flavourful. Served on a crusty roll dipped in cooking broth with green sauce.

Florentine workers have been enjoying this protein-packed lunch since the 15th century, often grabbing it from street carts called "trippaio".

    5. Muffuletta

Though now famous in New Orleans, the muffuletta's roots are firmly Italian. A round Sicilian sesame bread loaf split and layered with mortadella, salami, ham, provolone, and the crucial olive salad that gives it its distinctive tangy flavour.

Sicilian immigrants brought this hefty sandwich to America in the early 1900s, where it evolved into the iconic version we know today.

Though technically Portuguese, this sandwich has strong Italian influences and remains popular in Italian-Portuguese communities. A carnivore's dream featuring steak, ham, sausage, and melted cheese, all bathed in a spicy tomato-beer sauce.

Italian immigrants to Portugal in the 1960s helped refine this indulgent creation, adding their own touches to what has become one of Europe's most decadent sandwiches.

    7. Tramezzino

These dainty triangular sandwiches are Italy's answer to British tea sandwiches. Made with soft white bread with crusts removed, then filled with everything from tuna and olives to prosciutto and artichokes.

Created in Turin's historic Caffè Mulassano in the 1920s, tramezzini have become staples in cafés across Italy. Their name cleverly means "in between" – perfect for that mid-morning or afternoon hunger.
