Black bean soup is one of those dishes that feels hearty and wholesome without demanding much effort from you. It’s rich, full of flavour, and perfect for a quick lunch or cosy dinner. The best part? You can make a tasty version using just three tins from your cupboard, no chopping, no fuss, no long ingredient lists.
This recipe is based on our team’s experience and experimenting with different ingredients.

What Is Black Bean Soup?
Black bean soup is a smooth, comforting dish popular in Latin American and Caribbean cooking. Traditionally, it’s made by simmering dried black beans with onions, garlic, spices, and sometimes smoky ham or vegetables.
The beans naturally break down into a thick, earthy base, giving the soup its signature texture. Our three-tin version is a shortcut that keeps the spirit of the dish intact: deep flavour, good nutrition, and minimal washing up.

The Three Canned Ingredients You’ll Need
1 can of black beans: drained and rinsed to remove excess salt or brine.
2 cans of chicken or vegetable broth: your choice, depending on whether you want a meaty or vegetarian version.
1 can of diced tomatoes: adds body, tang, and natural sweetness.
That’s all you need: everything else is optional seasoning.
How to Make It
1. Prepare your beans
Drain and rinse the black beans under cold water. This keeps the soup’s flavour clean and prevents it from tasting overly salty.
2. Combine in a saucepan
Pour the broth into a medium saucepan and add the diced tomatoes and black beans. Give it all a good stir to combine.
3. Season and simmer
Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste, plus any extras you like: cumin, paprika, chilli flakes, or garlic powder all work beautifully. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes so the flavours can meld.
4. Blend or keep it rustic
For a smooth soup, use a stick blender to puree most of the mixture, leaving a little texture if you like. For a chunkier style, mash lightly with a potato masher while keeping plenty of whole beans intact.
5. Serve and enjoy
Ladle into bowls and add toppings if you fancy: fresh coriander, a dollop of sour cream or yoghurt, grated cheese, or a squeeze of lime juice.

Why This Recipe Works
With only three cans, you get a soup that’s quick, budget-friendly, and satisfying. The beans provide protein and fibre, the tomatoes bring brightness, and the broth adds depth without extra steps.
It’s a great fallback recipe for busy evenings, cold days, or those moments when the fridge is looking bare but you still want something that tastes like a proper meal.
