British food has always been about comfort, flavour, and a good dose of nostalgia. From the Sunday roast to a plate of golden fish and chips, these classics have stood the test of time.

Now, thanks to clever cooking and a rise in plant-based creativity, many of these much-loved meals are being reinvented without meat or dairy – and the results are every bit as satisfying.

This article is for general information and inspiration only. Recipes and ingredient availability may vary depending on personal preference and region.

Did you know the term 'shepherd's pie' was only coined in the 1870s? Originally made with leftover roast lamb, this humble dish has fed working families for ages. Swap minced lamb for hearty lentils or crumbled soya mince, and you've got yourself a proper plant-based version that's just as satisfying.

The secret lies in building deep, savoury flavours with tomato purée, Marmite, and plenty of herbs. Top it with creamy mashed potatoes made with plant butter and oat milk, then bake until golden. It's comfort food at its absolute finest, and nobody will miss the meat.

    2. Plant-Based Full English Breakfast

Brits consume over 300,000 tonnes of baked beans every year, making them a breakfast staple. The full English is practically a national treasure, and going vegan doesn't mean saying goodbye to this morning feast. Plant-based sausages from brands like Richmond or Linda McCartney work brilliantly alongside grilled tomatoes and mushrooms.

Swap scrambled eggs for silken tofu seasoned with black salt and turmeric for that eggy flavour. Add baked beans, hash browns, and some fried bread for a breakfast that'll keep you going all morning. Honestly, it's just as filling and twice as kind to animals.

    3. Vegan Fish And Chips

Wrapped in newspaper and eaten by the seaside, fish and chips has been Britain's favourite takeaway since the 1860s. Creating a vegan version might sound impossible, but banana blossom or tofu wrapped in nori seaweed delivers that oceanic taste perfectly. Coat it in beer batter made with sparkling water for extra crispiness.

Pair your 'fish' with thick-cut chips fried until golden and serve with mushy peas and vegan tartar sauce. Several chip shops across the UK now offer vegan options, so you can enjoy this seaside classic guilt-free.

    4. Mushroom Pie

Pies have been part of British cooking since medieval times, evolving from elaborate feasts to everyday pub grub. Meaty mushrooms like portobello and chestnut create incredible depth when slow-cooked in rich gravy. The umami flavour they bring is absolutely spot on for a satisfying pie filling.

Add carrots, onions, and fresh thyme, then wrap everything in golden puff pastry. Most shop-bought puff pastry is accidentally vegan, which makes this dish wonderfully straightforward. Serve it with mashed potatoes and greens for a meal that's proper British through and through.

    5. Vegan Toad In The Hole

Despite its peculiar name, this dish has nothing to do with amphibians and everything to do with sausages peeking through Yorkshire pudding batter. The name likely comes from the sausages resembling toads poking their heads from holes. Making it vegan is surprisingly simple with excellent plant-based bangers now available everywhere.

Whisk together plain flour, plant milk, and a pinch of salt for your batter, then pour it over pre-cooked vegan sausages in a hot tin. Bake until gloriously puffed and golden. Serve with onion gravy and veg for proper Sunday dinner vibes.

    6. Jackfruit Beef Wellington

Named after the Duke of Wellington, this showstopper has graced posh dinner tables since the early 1800s. Young jackfruit mimics the texture of pulled meat brilliantly when seasoned and roasted properly. Combined with mushroom duxelles and wrapped in flaky pastry, it creates an impressive centrepiece for special occasions.

Season your jackfruit with soy sauce, garlic, and herbs before wrapping it with sautéed mushrooms and a layer of vegan pâté. Brush with plant milk before baking until the pastry turns magnificently golden. Your guests will be absolutely gobsmacked.

    7. Dairy-Free Cauliflower Cheese

Cauliflower cheese has been a British side dish favourite since Victorian times, when cauliflower became widely available. Going dairy-free doesn't mean sacrificing that creamy, cheesy goodness everyone loves. Nutritional yeast adds a proper cheesy flavour, whilst cashew cream or plant-based cheese sauce brings the richness.

Steam your cauliflower until just tender, then smother it in vegan cheese sauce made with oat milk and vegan cheddar. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top and grill until golden and bubbling. It's a brilliant side dish that converts even the most sceptical dinner guests.

    8. Vegan Sunday Roast With Gravy

Sunday roast tradition dates back centuries, bringing families together for the week's most important meal. Creating a plant-based version means getting creative with your centrepiece. Nut roasts, stuffed squash, or shop-bought vegan roasts from brands like Tofurky all work brilliantly as the main attraction.

Surround your roast with crispy potatoes, Yorkshire puddings made with plant milk, seasonal veg, and lashings of onion gravy thickened with vegetable stock. Don't forget the cranberry sauce and stuffing. It's a feast that honours tradition whilst being completely cruelty-free and absolutely delicious.

    9. Lentil And Vegetable Cornish Pasty

Cornish miners carried these handheld meals underground in the 1800s, holding them by the crimped crust to avoid eating arsenic from their hands. Protected Geographical Indication status means only pasties made in Cornwall can use the name officially. Lentils replace the traditional beef whilst keeping that hearty, filling quality miners needed.

Mix lentils with diced potato, swede, and onion, then wrap in shortcrust pastry and crimp those iconic edges. Brush with plant milk and bake until golden. Perfect for packed lunches or eating on the go, just like they were meant to be.

    10. Vegan Sticky Toffee Pudding

A vegan take on this British classic proves you don’t need butter or cream to make something utterly indulgent.

Sticky toffee pudding gets its signature sweetness from dates blended into a rich sponge, while coconut milk or oat cream adds that luscious, velvety texture to the sauce.

Warm, gooey, and perfectly comforting, it’s the kind of dessert that feels just as decadent as the original – especially with a scoop of dairy-free vanilla ice cream on top.
