9 Surprising Foods That Support Bone Health

When it comes to supporting bone health, many of us jump straight to milk or yoghurt – but there’s far more to the story. A wide range of everyday foods quietly offers calcium, vitamin D, magnesium and other key nutrients that help keep bones strong.

Some of them are probably already in your kitchen, just waiting to do more for your body than you realised. Here are nine surprising foods that can play a useful role in maintaining healthy bones.

This article is for general informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Individual nutritional needs vary. For personalised guidance, consult a registered healthcare professional.

    1. Prunes

Ever wondered why your nan keeps a bag of prunes in the cupboard? Turns out she's onto something brilliant for bone health. These wrinkly dried plums contain boron, a mineral that helps your body hang onto calcium and vitamin D.

Research from nutritionists suggests that eating five or six prunes daily may slow bone loss in older adults. They're also loaded with vitamin K, which plays a vital role in bone formation. Pop a few in your morning porridge or enjoy them as a sweet snack – your skeleton will thank you for it.

    2. Tahini

This Middle Eastern staple has become a proper fixture in British kitchens, and for good reason beyond its gorgeous nutty flavour. Made from ground sesame seeds, tahini is absolutely brimming with calcium – just two tablespoons deliver around 130mg.

That's roughly the same amount you'd get from half a glass of milk. It also contains magnesium and phosphorus, two minerals that work alongside calcium to keep bones dense and strong. Drizzle it over roasted veg, stir it into hummus, or spread it on toast for a bone-friendly breakfast.

    3. Tinned Sardines (with bones)

Those tiny soft bones you find in tinned sardines aren't just edible – they're absolute gold for your skeleton. A single tin can provide more calcium than a glass of milk, plus you're getting a hefty dose of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids.

Vitamin D is crucial because it helps your body actually absorb all that lovely calcium. Mash them on toast, toss them through pasta, or pile them onto crackers. The bones are so soft you won't even notice them, but your body certainly will appreciate the nutritional boost they deliver.

    4. Fortified Plant Milk

Supermarket shelves are heaving with dairy alternatives these days, and many are fortified to match or even exceed the calcium content of cow's milk. Oat, almond, and soya varieties often pack around 120mg of calcium per 100ml, matching traditional dairy.

The clever bit is that manufacturers also add vitamin D and sometimes B12, creating a bone health powerhouse in a carton. Check the label to make sure yours is fortified, then use it exactly as you would regular milk – in tea, on cereal, or in your favourite baking recipes.

    5. Edamame

These bright green soya beans have travelled from Japanese restaurants straight into our freezer aisles, and they're brilliant for bone health. A single cup of shelled edamame delivers around 100mg of calcium, plus they're loaded with isoflavones – plant compounds that may help protect bone density.

Doctors note that soya foods contain protein and magnesium too, both essential for maintaining strong bones. Steam them for five minutes, sprinkle with a bit of sea salt, and squeeze them straight from the pod into your mouth. They make a proper tasty snack that's doing your skeleton a favour.

    6. Chia Seeds

Don't let their tiny size fool you – these little seeds pack an enormous nutritional wallop. Just two tablespoons of chia seeds contain around 180mg of calcium, which is nearly a fifth of what most adults need daily.

They're also rich in phosphorus and magnesium, minerals that work together to build bone tissue. Sprinkle them over your yoghurt, blend them into smoothies, or make chia pudding for breakfast. They swell up when wet, creating a lovely texture whilst quietly strengthening your bones from the inside out.

    7. Almonds

Grab a handful of almonds and you're getting far more than just a satisfying crunch. About 30g – roughly 23 almonds – provides around 75mg of calcium, plus magnesium and protein that support bone structure.

Nutritionists often recommend almonds because they contain healthy fats that help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D, which is essential for calcium absorption.

Keep a bag in your desk drawer for a mid-afternoon snack, scatter them over salads, or grind them into almond butter. Your taste buds and your bones will both be absolutely chuffed.

    8. Kale

This dark leafy green has earned its superfood status, and bone health is a big reason why. A 100g serving of cooked kale delivers around 150mg of calcium, and here's the clever bit – your body can absorb it more easily than calcium from some other plant sources.

Kale also provides vitamin K, which helps direct calcium into your bones rather than letting it float about elsewhere. Massage raw leaves with lemon for salads, bake them into crisps, or wilt them into stews. It's become a British staple for good reason.

    9. Tofu

Not all tofu is created equal when it comes to bone health – you want the calcium-set variety. This type is made using calcium sulphate, which means a 100g serving can deliver a whopping 350mg of calcium, more than a glass of milk.

It's also a brilliant source of protein, which your body needs to build bone tissue. Look for labels that mention calcium sulphate or calcium chloride in the ingredients list. Crumble it into scrambles, cube it for stir-fries, or marinate and bake it. It's a bone health champion hiding in plain sight.
