Garlic bread remains one of the most popular comfort foods, and it can be enjoyed in a fully plant-based version.
With the right bread, a well-balanced garlic spread, and dairy-free cheese alternatives, you can prepare a vegan option that is both flavourful and satisfying.

1. Choose The Perfect Bread Base

A French baguette is a reliable choice, with its crusty exterior and soft interior that soaks up garlic flavours well. Ciabatta brings a rustic texture, while sourdough offers a tangy depth.
Day-old bread works better than fresh, as it holds the garlic mixture without turning soggy.
2. Prepare The Vegan Cheese Mix

Nutritional yeast adds the nutty, cheesy flavour that forms the foundation of a vegan cheese mix. Combine it with cashew cream for richness, or use grated vegan mozzarella for melting.
A mix of different vegan cheeses often improves texture and taste. Herbs, garlic powder, and a squeeze of lemon juice enhance the final flavour.
3. Make The Garlic Butter

Softened vegan butter makes an ideal base for the spread, allowing even mixing. Fresh garlic cloves bring the strongest flavour, while roasted garlic offers a milder option.
Fresh parsley and dried Italian herbs add depth, and a pinch of salt ties the mixture together before spreading onto the bread.
4. Perfect Your Slicing Technique

Cut the loaf diagonally about three-quarters of the way through, leaving the base intact. This creates bite-sized portions while keeping the loaf connected.
Slices spaced two centimetres apart provide the right balance between flavour absorption and serving ease.
5. Layer Your Flavours Like A Pro

Spread the garlic butter mixture generously into the slices, then add your vegan cheese blend, pressing gently so it adheres.
Wrap the loaf in foil, leaving the top slightly uncovered during the last few minutes of baking to crisp the surface while keeping the inside soft.
6. Nail The Baking Process

Bake at 200 °C, starting with 15 minutes wrapped in foil, then open it and continue for 5–10 minutes. The bread should be golden on the outside with bubbling cheese on top.
Allow it to rest briefly before serving, as the flavours continue to develop once it comes out of the oven.
