Hosting a dinner party can be enjoyable when you have recipes that work well for a group.

Whether you are new to cooking or confident in the kitchen, these ideas can help create a relaxed, welcoming table.

These dinner party ideas come with simple preparation notes and can be adapted to your taste, diet, and kitchen. Results will vary depending on what you use and how you make them.

    1. Scotch Egg Sharing Platter

A Scotch egg combines a crisp breadcrumb coating with seasoned sausage meat and a softly cooked egg in the centre. Gentle cooking helps the yolk stay tender while ensuring the meat is cooked through.

Cutting the eggs into quarters makes them easier to serve and share. They can be arranged on a platter with mustard, piccalilli and pickled onions, offering a choice of flavours to go alongside the richness of the egg.

    2. Mushroom Wellington

Mushroom Wellington uses layers of mushrooms, chestnuts and herbs wrapped in puff pastry to create a rich vegetarian main course. Cooking the filling until it is well reduced brings out more flavour and helps prevent the pastry from becoming soggy.

Once assembled, it can be kept in the fridge until ready to bake, which makes it a practical choice when preparing several dishes. A simple red wine sauce or gravy can be served on the side to add more depth.

    3. Beef Wellington

Beef Wellington consists of beef fillet covered with mushroom duxelles, wrapped in Parma ham and enclosed in puff pastry. This layering keeps the beef moist while allowing the pastry to remain crisp.

It is usually baked so that the beef is still pink in the centre. Slicing it at the table gives a neat presentation, and it is well suited to being served with a red wine or peppercorn sauce.

    4. Beetroot And Salmon Blinis

Beetroot-cured salmon has a bright colour and a gentle earthy flavour that complements the fish. The curing process can be done in advance, which helps when planning a menu.

Thin slices of the salmon can be placed on small blinis with a spoon of horseradish cream and a sprig of dill. These can be served at room temperature and work well as part of a starter selection.

    5. Sticky Toffee Pudding

Sticky toffee pudding is made with softened dates, which keep the sponge moist and add a rich sweetness. A warm toffee sauce is poured over the sponge before serving.

Portioning the pudding into individual moulds can make it easier to serve and keeps the presentation tidy. It is often enjoyed with cream or ice cream, which balances the richness.

    6. Lemon Posset With Shortbread

Lemon posset is made with cream, sugar and lemon juice, producing a smooth set dessert with a fresh citrus flavour. The acidity of the lemon helps balance the richness of the cream.

Shortbread biscuits served on the side add texture and a buttery taste. The posset can be prepared the day before, which makes it useful for reducing preparation time on the day of the meal.

    7. Eton Mess Cheesecake

Eton Mess cheesecake combines a no-bake cheesecake base with strawberry coulis, crushed meringue and fresh strawberries (and other fruit, if you so wish). The result is a mix of creamy, fruity and crunchy textures.

Using a digestive biscuit base provides a firm foundation for the filling. The topping is best added just before serving to keep the meringue crisp.

    8. Treacle Tart

Treacle tart is made with golden syrup, breadcrumbs and lemon zest to create a sweet filling with a slight citrus note. The pastry case provides a firm, crisp contrast to the soft centre.

It can be served warm with custard or cream. Preparing it in advance and reheating gently before serving can save time on the day.

    9. Roasted Butternut Squash Risotto

Roasting the butternut squash before adding it to the risotto deepens its flavour and adds a mild caramelised taste. Stirring in the stock gradually creates a creamy consistency.

The dish can be finished with grated Parmesan and crispy sage leaves for added flavour and texture. It is suitable for serving as a vegetarian main course.

    10. Crab And Avocado Tian

Crab and avocado tian layers fresh crab meat with avocado and cucumber for a light starter. Using a ring mould helps keep the layers neat and presentable.

The dish is usually served chilled, sometimes with a sprinkle of herbs or a light dressing. Fresh ingredients give the best result.

    11. Goat's Cheese And Caramelised Onion Tartlets

These tartlets pair tangy goat’s cheese with the sweetness of slowly cooked onions. The pastry cases should be crisp to hold the filling well.

They can be assembled in advance and baked shortly before serving. A drizzle of balsamic glaze can add extra flavour and colour.

    12. Salmon En Croûte

Salmon en croûte is made by baking a side of salmon in puff pastry with a layer of herb cream cheese. The filling helps keep the fish moist during cooking.

It can be served with a light sauce made from dill and lemon. Preparing the pastry-wrapped salmon earlier in the day allows for straightforward cooking before serving.
