Your morning yoghurt might not be as healthy as you think. Many popular brands hide behind clever marketing while filling their products with excessive sugars, artificial additives, and questionable preservatives.

Reading labels carefully can save you from consuming these unnecessary ingredients that might undermine your health goals. Let's explore some yoghurt brands that might not deserve a place in your shopping trolley.

    1. Yoplait Original

Sugar overload alert! Each pot packs a whopping 19 grams of sugar – that's nearly 5 teaspoons in one small serving.

The protein content falls disappointingly short compared to other yoghurts on the market, while artificial flavours replace real fruit.

Many varieties contain modified corn starch and gelatin as thickeners rather than achieving creaminess through traditional fermentation methods.

    2. Danone Activia

Marketed as a digestive superhero, Activia's health claims often overshadow its problematic ingredient list. The 'fruit' varieties contain minimal actual fruit.

Hidden behind the probiotic benefits lurk artificial sweeteners like sucralose and acesulfame K, which some research links to altered gut bacteria – ironically counteracting the product's primary selling point.

    3. Müller Corner

Those tempting little corners pack a sugary punch! A single pot can contain up to 30g of sugar – more than a chocolate bar.

The chocolate balls and cookie pieces feature artificial colours and flavours that wouldn't be found in quality yoghurt. Even the yoghurt base contains modified starches and stabilisers.

    4. Chobani Flip

Don't flip out – but these seemingly protein-packed treats contain up to 22 grams of sugar per serving! The mix-in compartments feature candy-coated chocolates and cookie pieces that belong in desserts, not breakfast.

While the yoghurt base starts relatively healthy, the additions transform it into essentially a sweet treat with questionable nutritional value.

    5. Tesco Everyday Value Yoghurt

Budget-friendly but health-costly. These bargain pots rely heavily on milk powder rather than fresh milk, creating a less nutritious base.

Artificial flavourings mimic fruit tastes while containing barely any real fruit. The ingredient list reveals modified maize starch, carrageenan and other fillers that bulk up the product cheaply.

    6. Nestlé Ski Yoghurt

Remember those colourful Ski yoghurts from your childhood? Nostalgia aside, they're packed with unnecessary additives.

A typical fruit Ski yoghurt contains more sugar (21g per pot) than protein. The vibrant colours come courtesy of artificial dyes rather than natural fruit content.

Carrageenan and modified starch create that smooth texture – not quality fermentation.

    7. Breyers Yoghurt

From the ice cream makers comes yoghurt that's almost as indulgent – and not in a good way. Each serving contains corn starch, carrageenan, and pectin as thickeners rather than achieving creaminess through proper fermentation.

The fruit varieties contain more sugar (22g per serving) than strawberries. Even the plain variety includes unnecessary additives.

    8. Müller Light

The 'light' refers to fat content, not additives! These yoghurts contain aspartame and acesulfame K – artificial sweeteners that some studies link to increased appetite and metabolic issues.

The texture comes from thickeners like modified maize starch and gelatine rather than natural fermentation. Despite the 'light' label, they still contain added sugars alongside the artificial sweeteners.
