10 Overrated UK Food Chains And 5 That Are Hidden Gems

British high streets are packed with food chains vying for our attention and hard-earned cash. Some popular spots don't quite live up to the hype, while others fly under the radar despite serving incredible grub.

Ready for some honest opinions? Here's my take on which UK food chains are all sizzle but no steak - and which unsung heroes deserve your custom.

    1. Five Guys

£15 for a burger meal? You must be joking! While the patties are undeniably juicy, the eye-watering prices make this American import feel like daylight robbery.

The endless free toppings trick doesn't compensate for the basic interior and chaotic service. For what you're paying, you'd expect something revolutionary – not just a decent burger drowning in grease-soaked chips.

    2. Bill's

Remember when Bill's was actually special? Those days are long gone. What started as a quirky, quality-focused restaurant has morphed into a soulless chain with identikit branches.

The food isn't terrible, but it's thoroughly mediocre considering the prices they charge. Their breakfast might still pass muster, but everything else feels mass-produced and uninspired compared to genuinely passionate independents.

    3. Wagamama

Sitting elbow-to-elbow with strangers was novel in 1992. Now it's just annoying. Wagamama's communal benches and rushed service make you feel like you're on a conveyor belt rather than enjoying a meal.

The ramen lacks depth, the katsu curry is cloyingly sweet, and everything arrives at random times. Japanese food deserves better than this westernised, mass-produced interpretation that sacrifices authenticity for profit margins.

    4. Nando's

The cult of Nando's baffles me. It's chicken with spicy sauce – not the second coming! The infamous 'cheeky Nando's' has somehow convinced Brits that paying premium prices for self-service is a treat.

Yes, the chicken can be tasty when they don't overcook it. But the sides are forgettable, portions have shrunk, and prices keep climbing. The bottomless drinks refill doesn't make up for the fact you're essentially in a posh KFC.

    5. Dishoom

The emperor's new clothes of Indian dining. People queue for hours based on hype rather than substance. While Dishoom's Bombay café aesthetic is admittedly gorgeous, style trumps substance here.

Their signature black daal is decent, but most dishes are merely adequate versions of what you'd find in authentic Indian restaurants for half the price. The Instagram-worthy interior can't compensate for the inflated prices and pretentious atmosphere.

    6. Prezzo

Prezzo epitomises everything wrong with chain Italian restaurants. Microwaved pasta swimming in bland sauce, pizzas with cardboard-like bases, and tiramisu that's never seen Italy – all at prices that would make a nonna weep.

The dated decor and disinterested staff complete the underwhelming experience. Every high street has at least one authentic Italian trattoria serving food with actual soul – seek them out instead of this corporate imitation.

    7. PizzaExpress

Once revolutionary, PizzaExpress now coasts on nostalgia rather than quality. Their dough balls remain the highlight – which says everything about their actual pizzas.

The crust has become thinner while prices have ballooned. Service varies wildly between branches, and the corporate cookie-cutter feel has replaced any charm they once had. Even their famous Sloppy Giuseppe seems to have less topping than in years past.

    8. Frankie & Benny's

The bizarre Italian-American theme feels like it was conceived by someone who's never visited either country. The food is a strange mishmash that does justice to neither cuisine.

Overly sweet tomato sauces, rubbery mozzarella sticks, and burgers that taste suspiciously microwaved are their hallmarks. The constant blaring of 'Happy Birthday' every fifteen minutes completes this peculiar dining purgatory that somehow survives despite nobody actually enjoying it.

    9. Bella Italia

If Italy knew what Bella Italia was doing to their cuisine, they'd declare war. Their pasta arrives suspiciously quickly (hello, microwave) and tastes like it came from a packet with a cartoon chef on it.

The pizzas feature dough that's neither crispy nor chewy – just sad. Everything is drowning in salt to mask the lack of flavour. Even the tiramisu tastes like it was made by someone who's only seen pictures of the dessert.

    10. TGI Fridays

The 1990s called – they want their restaurant concept back. TGI Fridays feels like a time capsule, complete with overly complicated cocktails and staff forced to feign American-style enthusiasm.

The food is a parade of deep-fried everything, drowning in sickly sweet sauces. Portions are enormous but quality is minuscule. The birthday celebrations with mandatory clapping create an atmosphere of forced fun that's more exhausting than entertaining.

    11. Honest Burgers

Finally, a burger chain that lives up to its name! Honest Burgers sources meat from their own butchery, ensuring exceptional quality in every bite. Their rosemary salted chips alone justify a visit.

What sets them apart is their commitment to locality – each branch features a unique burger inspired by its neighbourhood. No frozen patties or heat lamps here – just properly cooked meat in a brioche bun that doesn't disintegrate halfway through.

    12. Manjaro's

A northern powerhouse that deserves nationwide recognition! This African-Caribbean fusion spot delivers flavour explosions that mainstream chains can only dream about. Their signature chicken dishes combine aromatic spices with perfectly grilled meat.

Portions are generous without sacrificing quality. The atmosphere buzzes with energy, and staff genuinely care about your experience. If you're tired of bland chain food, Manjaro's bold flavours will wake up your taste buds.

    13. Greens

Vegetarian food that even committed carnivores queue for? That's Greens for you. Founded by TV chef Simon Rimmer, this Manchester institution proves plant-based dining can be indulgent rather than punishing.

Their deep-fried oyster mushrooms could convert the most dedicated meat-eater. The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between special and comfortable. No wonder they've thrived for over 30 years while bigger chains have come and gone.

    14. Figo's Mediterranean Kitchen

Tucked away on the Wirral, Figo's transports diners straight to the Turkish coast. Their mezze platters feature homemade dips that put supermarket hummus to shame. The star attraction is the slow-cooked lamb, which falls apart at the mere suggestion of a fork.

The family-run atmosphere creates genuine warmth rather than the corporate friendliness of bigger chains. Each dish tastes like someone's treasured family recipe rather than something developed in a test kitchen.

    15. La Pazienza

This Northampton gem puts most Italian chains to shame with its genuinely authentic cooking. Their slow-cooked lamb chops in red wine reduction should be declared a national treasure.

The family-run restaurant feels like dining in someone's (very talented) nonna's home. Pasta is made fresh daily, and portions are generous without being overwhelming. The tiramisu contains enough booze to require ID checking – exactly as it should be!
