Ranking British Crisp Flavours From 'National Treasure' To 'Total Rubbish'

The humble crisp – a staple of British snacking culture that sparks more heated debates than politics at a family dinner. From school lunchboxes to pub tables, these flavoured potato slices have become part of our national identity.

I've taken on the monumentally important task of ranking our most iconic crisp flavours, from the absolute legends to the ones that should probably be binned. Grab a packet and prepare to be either vindicated or outraged.

    1. Salt & Vinegar (Walkers)

Nothing screams 'British' quite like these mouth-puckering beauties. The perfect balance of tangy vinegar sharpness and salty goodness creates a flavour explosion that leaves your taste buds tingling (and sometimes your lips slightly raw).

These iconic crisps have fuelled playground trades for generations – often being the most valuable currency in lunchbox bartering systems. The unmistakable smell that hits when you tear open the packet is practically Pavlovian.

They're versatile enough for any occasion, from sandwich sidekicks to pub companions. Salt & Vinegar represents the pinnacle of crisp engineering – bold, unapologetic, and instantly recognisable. A true national treasure.

    2. Cheese & Onion (Walkers)

The blue packet that launched a thousand arguments. Cheese & Onion holds a special place in Britain's heart – the reliable friend who's always there when you need comfort. That distinctive smell alone can divide a room faster than Brexit discussions.

What makes these crisps so brilliant is their perfect balance. The rich, tangy cheese flavour hits first, followed by that gentle onion warmth that lingers just long enough. No other brand has quite nailed this combination like Walkers.

Fun fact: until 1989, Cheese & Onion Walkers came in green packets, not blue! The flavour remains unchanged though – a reliable, comforting classic that delivers every single time.

    3. Pickled Onion (Walkers Monster Munch)

Those monstrous, claw-shaped snacks that turn your tongue a frightening shade of pink – absolute childhood magic! Monster Munch transcends being merely a crisp; they're an experience, a rite of passage for British kids.

The pickled onion flavour hits with an intensity that makes your eyes water slightly, but in the most delightful way possible. That tangy, slightly sweet, and definitely artificial taste is utterly unique and impossible to resist.

Remember measuring your fingers against these claw-shaped beauties? Or the playground debates about whether they're actually monster feet or claws? Beyond nostalgia, they genuinely deliver a flavour punch that few other crisps can match.

    4. Prawn Cocktail (Walkers)

Foreigners often recoil in horror at the concept, but Brits know better. Prawn Cocktail crisps don't actually taste of prawns – they capture that perfect sweet-tangy-creamy essence of the 1970s starter without any fishy business.

The pink packet has been a lunchbox staple for decades, offering that unmistakable tang that somehow manages to be both sophisticated and completely artificial at the same time. They're the crisp equivalent of a guilty pleasure pop song – you might not admit they're your favourite, but you'll demolish a packet in seconds.

Weirdly, despite their seafood inspiration, they're vegetarian-friendly. This flavour perfectly demonstrates British eccentricity in snack form – nonsensical yet absolutely brilliant.

    5. Flame Grilled Steak (McCoy's)

McCoy's didn't come to play games with their Flame Grilled Steak variety. These are proper, substantial crisps for serious snackers – the ridges alone make them feel like a meal rather than a mere nibble.

The robust, meaty flavour somehow manages to genuinely evoke a chargrilled steak, complete with smoky notes and a savoury depth that puts most meat-flavoured crisps to shame. The extra thickness provides a deeply satisfying crunch that echoes around your skull in the best possible way.

These are the crisps you reach for when regular varieties just won't cut it. They're the heavyweight champion of the crisp world – substantial, intensely flavoured, and impossible to eat delicately.

    6. BBQ Beef (Hula Hoops)

These ring-shaped marvels have entertained generations of British children who immediately stick them on their fingers before eating them. The BBQ Beef variety elevates this playful snack to new heights with its smoky, slightly sweet flavour profile.

The cylindrical shape creates a uniquely satisfying crunch, while the hollow centre somehow intensifies the flavour. There's something almost architectural about the perfect Hula Hoop – sturdy enough to wear as a finger decoration but with just the right amount of brittleness when bitten.

Beyond the novelty factor, the BBQ Beef flavouring is genuinely delicious – smoky, rich and moreish without being overwhelming. A properly underrated crisp that deserves more recognition in the pantheon of British snacks.

    7. Slow-Roasted Pork & Apple Sauce (Walkers Sensations)

When Walkers decided to go upmarket with their Sensations range, they struck gold with this sophisticated flavour combination. The fancy packaging alone makes you feel like you're having a premium snacking experience – these aren't everyday crisps, these are special occasion crisps.

The flavour genuinely captures that Sunday roast essence – savoury, slightly sweet pork notes balanced perfectly with a hint of apple tartness. You can almost imagine the crackling when you crunch down on these thicker-cut beauties.

Perfect for those moments when regular crisps feel too mundane, these are the snacks you break out when you're trying to impress guests. They're what happens when British comfort food meets posh nibbles – familiar yet somehow elevated.

    8. Garlic Bread (Aldi Specially Selected)

Who'd have thought a supermarket own-brand would create such a masterpiece? These hand-cooked crisps from Aldi's posh range deliver an authentic garlic bread experience in crisp form – buttery, garlicky and properly addictive.

Each crisp carries just the right balance of garlic punch and herby notes, without straying into breath-destroying territory. The thicker cut gives a satisfying crunch that echoes their premium positioning. They've developed something of a cult following among crisp connoisseurs.

The only downside is they're often limited editions that appear and disappear from shelves without warning. When you spot them, grab multiple bags – these are the crisps that prove supermarket own-brands can sometimes outshine the big names.

    9. Chicken Curry (Seabrook)

Seabrook's crinkle-cut Chicken Curry crisps are the Marmite of the crisp world – people either adore them or consider them an abomination. These yellow-tinged snacks attempt to capture Britain's favourite takeaway in potato form, with surprisingly authentic results.

The distinctive crinkle cut creates extra surface area for the curry powder to cling to, delivering a genuine curry kick with notes of turmeric, cumin and a hint of chicken stock. They're intensely flavoured in a way that can be overwhelming for casual crisp fans.

Yorkshire-based Seabrook has always done things differently, with their trademark crunch and no-nonsense approach to flavouring. These crisps are best enjoyed with a cold beer – just like their inspiration!

    10. Cheddar & Chutney (Seabrook)

On paper, this should work brilliantly – cheese and chutney is a classic British combination that rarely disappoints. Somehow, Seabrook managed to transform this winning duo into something that tastes vaguely medicinal and oddly synthetic.

The cheese element comes across as overly artificial, while the chutney component adds a strange sweetness that never quite integrates with the cheese notes. The balance is all wrong, creating a confused flavour profile that leaves you wondering what exactly you're eating.

Even the crinkle cut texture, usually Seabrook's saving grace, can't rescue these unfortunate crisps. They're the experimental flavour that should have stayed in the development lab – proof that not every British food tradition translates well to crisp form.
