London’s restaurant scene moves quickly, yet some dining rooms have stood their ground for generations. Across the capital, a handful of listed restaurants continue to serve food beneath ceilings, tiles, and woodwork that have witnessed decades – sometimes centuries – of changing tastes.

These are not themed recreations or polished tributes to the past, but working establishments where heritage is part of the everyday experience. Eating in these spaces offers more than a good meal.

Original features, preserved interiors, and long-standing traditions shape the atmosphere as much as the menu does. For anyone curious about how history and hospitality meet, these London restaurants show how the city’s story still unfolds at the table.

All information is provided for general interest and entertainment purposes only. Listed status, interiors, menus, and opening hours may change over time. Photos are for illustrative purposes only.

    1. Rules

Since 1798, Rules has been dishing up classic British grub in Covent Garden, making it London's oldest restaurant. The place looks absolutely gorgeous with its crimson walls, gilded fixtures, and enough Victorian charm to make you feel like you've stepped into a Dickens novel.

Game dishes are the specialty here – think venison, grouse, and pheasant sourced from their own estate. The traditional puddings are proper crowd-pleasers too.

Literary legends from Charles Dickens to H.G. Wells have pulled up chairs here, and the atmosphere still crackles with that same historic magic today.

    2. E Pellicci

Tucked away in Bethnal Green since 1900, this family-run café is an absolute gem with its stunning Art Deco interior that's remained virtually untouched for over a century. The Pellicci family still runs the show, serving up hearty British-Italian comfort food that keeps locals coming back generation after generation.

Everything about this place screams authenticity, from the original marquetry panels to the warm welcome you'll get at the counter. Full English breakfasts sit alongside Italian pasta dishes, creating a menu that perfectly reflects East London's cultural melting pot.

It's listed Grade II for good reason – the craftsmanship is remarkable.

    3. The Quality Chop House

Originally opened in 1869 as a 'progressive working class caterer', this Farringdon institution still features those brilliantly uncomfortable original wooden bench seats that were designed to discourage lingering. The Grade II listed interior is a proper time capsule of Victorian London's dining culture.

These days, the menu's gone decidedly upmarket while keeping that hearty, no-nonsense spirit intact. Seasonal British ingredients take centre stage, with dishes that honour traditional techniques whilst feeling thoroughly modern.

The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between historic reverence and contemporary cool, making it popular with Clerkenwell's creative crowd who appreciate both good design and cracking food.

    4. Royal Oak

This proper Victorian boozer proves that listed buildings don't have to be stuffy or formal. The Royal Oak maintains all its period charm whilst serving up seasonal British cooking that goes well beyond standard pub fare, earning it a dedicated following amongst food-savvy Londoners.

The dining room showcases beautiful original features that transport you straight back to the 19th century. What sets this place apart is how it balances heritage with accessibility – you can pop in for a casual bite or settle in for a proper meal.

The menu changes regularly based on what's in season, with a focus on quality ingredients prepared simply and served without pretension.

    5. Mercato Mayfair

Housed in a stunning former church in the heart of Mayfair, Mercato Mayfair transforms a listed building into a vibrant Italian food market that's equal parts theatre and restaurant. The soaring ceilings and original architectural details create an absolutely breathtaking backdrop for your meal.

Rather than one single menu, you'll find multiple Italian food vendors serving everything from fresh pasta to wood-fired pizza under one magnificent roof. It's a brilliant concept that lets you sample different regional Italian specialties whilst surrounded by jaw-dropping Victorian architecture.

The atmosphere buzzes with energy, making it feel like you've been transported to a grand European market hall.

    6. PizzaExpress

Wait, PizzaExpress on a heritage list? Absolutely – several of their London locations occupy genuinely significant listed buildings that deserve recognition.

The Holborn branch sits in a former dairy with gorgeous Victorian tiles, whilst the Soho spot features stunning Art Deco details that catch your eye between bites of dough balls.

What's clever about PizzaExpress is how they've preserved these historic interiors whilst keeping the relaxed, accessible vibe the chain's known for. You get proper architectural eye candy without the intimidating atmosphere or eye-watering prices of fancier establishments.

It's democratic dining at its finest – everyone deserves to eat pizza surrounded by beautiful period features.

    7. Serpentine Bar & Kitchen

Perched beside the Serpentine lake in Hyde Park, this striking spot occupies a 1960s gunpowder store that's been reimagined by architect Zaha Hadid. The Grade II listed original building sits alongside a contemporary extension, creating a fascinating dialogue between past and present that architecture buffs absolutely love.

The menu focuses on seasonal Mediterranean-inspired dishes that feel light and fresh, perfectly suited to the park setting. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views across the water and parkland, whilst the historic brickwork reminds you of the building's fascinating past.

It's proof that listed buildings can embrace bold modern design whilst respecting their heritage.
