Every generation has its signature sweet - the kind that instantly transports you back to family gatherings, school lunches, or lazy Sunday afternoons.

From wobbly puddings to picture-perfect cakes, desserts have quietly mirrored the trends and tastes of their time.

These sugary icons tell the story of how our cravings have changed over the decades, one slice at a time.

Layers of sponge cake, fruit, custard, and cream made trifle the ultimate showstopper at every family gathering.

Post-war Britain embraced this colourful dessert as a symbol of celebration and abundance.

Served in glass bowls, trifle was as much about presentation as taste, making every occasion feel special and indulgent.

Imagine a spiral of vanilla ice cream wrapped in light sponge cake, then sliced into perfect rounds.

Arctic Roll became a freezer staple that symbolised modern convenience and space-age innovation.

Kids begged for it at teatime, and mums loved how easy it was to serve.

This frosty favourite felt futuristic and fun, capturing the optimism of the swinging sixties in every chilly bite.

Dark chocolate sponge, whipped cream, and cherries created a dessert that felt impossibly glamorous.

Black Forest Gateau arrived from Germany and quickly became the centrepiece of every dinner party and birthday celebration.

Chocolate shavings cascaded down the sides like edible confetti.

Rich, indulgent, and slightly over-the-top, this gateau perfectly captured the bold, adventurous spirit of seventies entertaining.

Wafer-thin layers of vanilla ice cream and crispy chocolate created a dessert that looked restaurant-fancy but came from your freezer.

Viennetta made every family meal feel like a special occasion without any effort.

Slicing through those delicate layers felt oddly satisfying.

Adverts promised Italian sophistication, and we absolutely believed them, making Viennetta the ultimate eighties status symbol in frozen form.

Warm, moist sponge drenched in buttery toffee sauce became the comfort food champion of British puddings.

Sticky Toffee Pudding dominated restaurant menus and home kitchens throughout the nineties.

Dates gave it incredible moistness, whilst the sauce was pure liquid gold.

Served with vanilla ice cream or thick custard, this dessert felt like a warm hug on a plate, perfectly suited to Britpop-era cosiness.

Cut into the cake, and molten chocolate oozed out like edible magic.

Chocolate Lava Cake became the must-have restaurant dessert that made everyone feel sophisticated and indulged.

Timing was everything - too long in the oven and the lava disappeared.
