Every decade brings a wave of food fads that seem groundbreaking at the time, only to leave us wondering what we were thinking later.
From over-the-top presentation to oddly specific diets, some trends are destined to age about as well as a forgotten avocado toast.
Looking back on them in a few years will probably make us smile - or cringe - but that’s all part of the fun of eating with the times.
This content is for general information and entertainment purposes only. Food availability, popularity, and dietary trends may vary by region and over time.
1. Cloud Bread

Ever tried eating air? That's basically what cloud bread felt like.
This three-ingredient wonder made from eggs, cream cheese, and cream of tartar promised to replace regular bread without all those pesky carbs.
People whisked egg whites into stiff peaks, folded in the other bits, and baked puffy circles that deflated the moment you touched them.
Sure, it looked gorgeous on social media, but let's be honest – it tasted like sweetened disappointment.
2. Charcoal Lattes

Nothing says "good morning" quite like starting the day with a jet-black latte, does it?
Activated charcoal became the must-have ingredient for health-conscious coffee lovers who wanted their morning cuppa to double as a detox.
Cafés charged extra for turning your latte pitch black, claiming it would cleanse your system.
The science was dodgy, and it made your teeth look grey.
Plus, it actually interfered with medication absorption.
3. Avocado Toast

Millennials supposedly bankrupted themselves buying this simple snack instead of saving for houses.
Smashed avocado on toast became the symbol of an entire generation's spending habits, with cafés charging upwards of eight quid for what's essentially green mush on bread.
Fair enough, it's tasty and nutritious, but did it really warrant the cult status and eye-watering price tags?
4. Rainbow Bagels

These psychedelic bagels took New York by storm before spreading worldwide, turning ordinary bread into tie-dye masterpieces.
Bakeries added food colouring to the dough, swirled it together, and charged double for the privilege.
They tasted exactly like regular bagels but looked absolutely mental.
Instagram loved them, but your digestive system probably didn't.
5. Dalgona Coffee

Lockdown boredom gave birth to this whipped coffee sensation that had everyone's arms aching.
Equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water got whisked into stiff peaks, then plopped onto cold milk for a fancy-looking drink you could make at home.
TikTok went absolutely mad for it during the pandemic, with millions attempting the 400-whisk challenge. It was basically sugary coffee mousse pretending to be sophisticated.
6. Gold Leaf Burgers

Nothing captured the over-the-top food trend era quite like a burger covered in gold.
High-end restaurants started wrapping burgers in edible gold leaf, charging hundreds of pounds for what was essentially a normal burger wearing fancy jewellery.
The gold added absolutely nothing to the flavour – it's completely tasteless – but it sure looked impressive on social media.
7. Galaxy Foods

Everything suddenly had to look like it came straight out of outer space, from galaxy doughnuts to shimmering rainbow lattes.
Food colouring, edible glitter, and swirled icing turned ordinary treats into cosmic-looking showpieces.
They looked incredible on camera but rarely tasted any different from the regular versions underneath.
Once the novelty wore off, most people realised they preferred flavour over fancy stardust visuals.
8. Freakshakes

Milkshakes went absolutely bonkers when someone decided more was more, then added even more on top.
These towering monstrosities came loaded with entire cakes, doughnuts, chocolate bars, and enough whipped cream to sink a ship.
They contained about three days' worth of calories and cost nearly twenty quid. You needed a ladder to reach the straw.
Most people couldn't eve finish them.
9. TikTok Pasta

One Finnish blogger's recipe caused actual feta shortages in supermarkets worldwide.
Chuck a block of feta and some cherry tomatoes in the oven, mash it up, mix with pasta – boom, you're a chef.
TikTok users lost their minds over this ridiculously simple dish, making it millions of times over.
Shops couldn't keep feta in stock.
It's nice enough, but the buzz around it was properly over the top.
10. Butter Boards

Charcuterie boards got a weird makeover when someone smeared butter all over a wooden plank.
Instead of arranging cheese and crackers nicely, people spread softened butter across boards, then decorated it with herbs, honey, and fancy salt.
You'd scrape it onto bread like some sort of communal butter sculpture. It looked artistic but seemed deeply unhygienic.
Plus, cleaning butter out of wood grain? Absolute nightmare.
11. Ramen Burgers

Someone decided that burger buns were overrated and replaced them with crispy blocks of fried ramen noodles.
The idea sounded clever until you tried to bite into one without noodles exploding everywhere.
They were messy, awkward to eat, and didn’t actually improve the flavour of a good burger.
It felt like a novelty stunt that made headlines rather than something anyone genuinely wanted long-term.
