Tucked along a quiet stretch of Merton Road in Southfields, a small serving window has become an unexpected destination for food lovers.

La Finestra offers freshly made focaccia sandwiches filled with classic Italian ingredients, all prepared and handed out through a single window.

What looks like a simple setup has quickly earned attention for its quality, charm, and strong connection to the flavours of southern Italy. For anyone interested in discovering one of South London’s most distinctive lunch spots, this little window is well worth a visit.

This content is for general information only. Menu items, opening hours, and product availability may vary. References to La Finestra are based on publicly available information at the time of writing. Photos are for illustrative purposes only.

La Finestra has quickly become a Southfields curiosity, partly because it is not a traditional shop at all. Instead, customers order their lunch through a simple street-facing window, where the aroma of warm focaccia drifts out onto Merton Road.

The space may be small, but the flavours are unmistakably Italian, inspired by the food traditions of Puglia.

What looks like an unassuming hole in the wall has become a place where passers-by can enjoy a genuine taste of southern Italy without stepping into a restaurant.

    2. The Story Behind Stefano Liantonio’s One-Window Sandwich Shop

Owner Stefano Liantonio grew up in Puglia before spending a decade working across London’s hospitality scene.

From his early days polishing glasses as a barback to becoming general manager at Electric Shuffle in Canary Wharf, he built a career shaped by long hours, high standards, and a drive to create something of his own.

That ambition eventually took shape as La Finestra, a concept rooted in his family’s tradition of running independent businesses.

Spotting a gap in Southfields for something fresh and healthier than the usual takeaway fare, he decided the neighbourhood needed a new kind of lunch option.

    3. Why Puglian Focaccia Is The Heart Of Every Sandwich

Every sandwich served at La Finestra is built on soft, olive oil-rich focaccia that Stefano grew up eating in Puglia. This bread is the foundation of the whole menu, giving each sandwich its distinctive texture and flavour.

Light, airy, and golden from the oil, it holds generous layers of meats, cheeses, and vegetables without becoming heavy or dry.

The focaccia is what elevates La Finestra beyond a typical takeaway window, offering something rooted in family tradition and Italian craft.

The menu features twelve combinations, each packed with classic Italian ingredients. Customers can choose fillings like ventricina, mortadella, speck, mozzarella, burrata, gorgonzola, grilled artichokes, and rich truffle cream.

These choices reflect Stefano’s aim to bring quality Italian produce to a corner of South London that has long relied on fried chicken, kebabs, and chip shops.

The result is a selection of sandwiches that feel fresh, generous, and true to the flavours of southern Italy.

Stefano’s personal favourite, the Notte Pugliese, features parma ham, grilled artichoke, burrata, and truffle cream. He describes the combination as “paradise in your mouth,” and it has already become one of the most talked-about options among early customers.

While the main menu is firmly rooted in classic ingredients, La Finestra plans to add limited-edition specials each month, offering new combinations such as a forthcoming beef sandwich and a possible tuna option.

    6. How La Finestra Plans To Grow Beyond Southfields

Despite being open for only a short time, La Finestra is already attracting regulars and plenty of curiosity from people passing through the area.

Stefano believes the concept has real potential to expand, bringing more “windows” to other parts of the city.

With its simple model, quality ingredients, and distinctive charm, the idea of replicating the Southfields experience elsewhere in London feels entirely possible. For now, though, the original window at 270 Merton Road remains the place to try it first.
