Health authorities grew concerned about bromine accumulation in the body, which could potentially affect the nervous system. Several countries banned the substance before Britain followed suit.
Manufacturers found alternative emulsifiers that worked just as well without the health risks. Most people never noticed the change, as their favourite drinks tasted exactly the same.
Trans Fats
Trans fats were everywhere in processed foods during the 1990s and early 2000s. Manufacturers loved them because they extended shelf life and created appealing textures in biscuits, cakes, and pastries.
Scientists discovered these fats raised bad cholesterol whilst lowering good cholesterol, significantly increasing heart disease risk. The evidence became overwhelming, prompting government action across Europe.
Britain effectively banned artificial trans fats in 2018, forcing reformulations across the food industry. Healthier alternatives now achieve similar results without compromising cardiovascular health.
Synthetic Food Dyes (In Sweets And Desserts)

Sweets once glowed with unnaturally bright colours that seemed almost radioactive under shop lighting. Children's desserts featured electric blues, shocking pinks, and fluorescent greens achieved through synthetic chemistry.
Mounting evidence about behavioural effects in children prompted the European Food Safety Authority to require warning labels. Rather than display these warnings, most manufacturers simply reformulated their products.
Natural alternatives from fruits and vegetables now provide the colour, though sometimes in slightly more muted tones. The difference is barely noticeable, and parents feel much better about their choices.
Beef Extract
Remember when beef extract appeared in seemingly everything? Stock cubes, crisps, and even some breakfast cereals contained this ingredient during the 1980s and early 1990s.
The BSE crisis (mad cow disease) changed everything practically overnight. Public confidence in beef products plummeted, and manufacturers scrambled to reformulate their recipes without bovine ingredients.
Vegetable extracts and mushroom powders proved excellent replacements, delivering rich umami flavours without the controversy. Most products never returned to using beef extract, even after the crisis passed.
Azodicarbonamide (Used In Bread Products)

This tongue-twisting chemical served as a flour improver and dough conditioner in commercial bread production. Bakers valued it for creating consistent texture and extending freshness in mass-produced loaves.
Problems emerged when people realised the same chemical appeared in yoga mats and shoe soles. Public outcry intensified after reports linked it to respiratory issues in bakery workers.
Britain and the EU banned azodicarbonamide years before other countries took action. Modern bread relies on enzymes and ascorbic acid instead, achieving similar results without the controversy.
Rennet In Vegetarian Products
Traditional cheesemaking relied on animal rennet, an enzyme extracted from calves' stomachs. This posed obvious problems for vegetarians who wanted to enjoy cheese without compromising their principles.
For years, vegetarian cheese remained a niche product with limited availability and questionable texture. Growing demand finally pushed manufacturers to develop microbial and vegetable-based alternatives that worked just as well
