Which Supermarkets Offer Senior Discounts On Food And How To Claim Them

Stretching your food budget can make a real difference – especially if you’re living on a fixed income. Many supermarkets across the UK quietly offer special discounts and savings schemes for older shoppers, though they’re not always easy to spot.

Knowing which stores participate and how to claim these perks can help you keep your weekly shop affordable without cutting back on the essentials.

This article is for general informational purposes only. Discount availability, eligibility, and terms vary by retailer and location – always check with your local supermarket for the latest details before shopping.

    Tesco

Britain's biggest grocer doesn't run a blanket senior discount scheme, which might come as a bit of a surprise given its size. However, Tesco Clubcard holders can access personalised offers that sometimes favour older shoppers, especially through targeted vouchers sent via email or the app.

Your best bet is signing up for a Clubcard if you haven't already, as the algorithm occasionally throws out deals on essentials like bread, milk, and tinned goods. While it's not a guaranteed discount every week, keeping an eye on your personalised offers can lead to decent savings over time.

    Sainsbury's

Much like its main rival, Sainsbury's doesn't offer a dedicated senior discount policy across all stores. Some individual branches, particularly smaller local ones, have been known to offer occasional pensioner discounts on certain days, but this varies wildly by location and isn't company policy.

Your local manager might run a community initiative, so it's worth popping in and asking at customer services. Nectar card members also receive tailored deals, and older customers sometimes find these promotions align well with their shopping habits, particularly on health foods and household staples.

    Asda

Asda previously ran a 10% discount for over 60s on Tuesdays, and while this scheme has been scaled back in many locations, some stores still honour it on a case by case basis. It's one of those things that depends entirely on where you live, so ringing ahead or checking with staff is sensible.

If your local branch does participate, you'll typically need to show proof of age at the checkout, such as a bus pass or driving licence. Even without the discount, Asda's everyday pricing tends to be competitive, making it a solid choice for budget conscious pensioners.

    Aldi

Aldi operates on a no frills, low price model, which means they don't typically offer loyalty schemes or senior discounts. Their philosophy is straightforward: keep prices rock bottom for everyone, every day, so additional discounts aren't part of the equation.

That said, their pricing structure often beats competitors even without a pensioner perk, making it a favourite among older shoppers watching their budgets. If you're after value rather than vouchers, Aldi's weekly specials and middle aisle surprises can still deliver serious savings on everything from fresh veg to tinned essentials.

    Morrisons

Morrisons doesn't have an official nationwide senior discount, but they do run a More Card loyalty scheme that offers personalised prices and points on purchases. Occasionally, older customers receive targeted vouchers through the app or by post, especially around seasonal promotions.

Some stores have been known to host community events or offer discounts during quieter shopping periods for pensioners, though this isn't guaranteed. Signing up for the More Card is free and straightforward, and it's worth doing if you're a regular at Morrisons, as the accumulated points can be redeemed for money off future shops.

    Lidl

Like its German cousin Aldi, Lidl focuses on slashing prices for all shoppers rather than running age specific discount schemes. Their business model relies on efficiency and bulk buying power, passing savings directly to customers without the need for loyalty cards or vouchers.

While there's no senior discount to claim, Lidl's weekly offers and bakery bargains at closing time can be brilliant for pensioners on a budget. Their fresh produce and own brand essentials often undercut bigger chains, so even without a special scheme, your shopping bill should stay pleasantly low if you shop smart.

    Waitrose

Waitrose doesn't offer a dedicated senior discount, but their myWaitrose loyalty scheme provides perks like free tea or coffee when you shop, plus personalised offers and member only pricing on selected items. Older shoppers often appreciate the quieter, more relaxed shopping environment and helpful staff.

While Waitrose is generally pricier than budget chains, their essential range competes well on cost, and the quality is consistently high. Signing up for myWaitrose is free, and the personalised deals can make a noticeable dent in your bill, especially if you're loyal to certain products or shop regularly.
