10 Tinned Foods Brits Secretly Love But Never Admit

Everyone’s got a guilty pleasure hiding in the back of the cupboard – those tins you swear you only buy “for emergencies” but secretly love. There’s something undeniably comforting about peeling back that metal lid after a long day – the sound, the smell, and the instant nostalgia that comes with it.

Whether it’s beans on toast, tinned puddings, or that suspiciously perfect spaghetti in sauce, these humble cans have earned a quiet but loyal following. Here are the tinned foods that Brits secretly adore – even if they’d never say it out loud.

This article is for general information and entertainment purposes only. Availability of tinned foods may vary between UK supermarkets and regions.

    1. Fray Bentos Pies

Back in the 1950s, a pie in a tin seemed like pure wizardry, and somehow that magic hasn't worn off. Fray Bentos pies arrive in their iconic metal tins, ready to transform into a proper meal with minimal effort.

Pop one in the oven, wait for that pastry lid to puff up and turn golden, and you've got yourself a steaming hot pie without any of the faff. Steak and kidney remains the classic choice, though chicken and mushroom has its loyal fans too.

Sure, it's not quite like a homemade pie from scratch, but when hunger strikes and you can't be bothered with rolling pastry, this tinned marvel delivers every single time.

    2. Ambrosia Custard And Rice Pudding

Ambrosia has been dishing out comfort in a tin since 1917, and their custard and rice pudding remain staples in British cupboards nationwide. That thick, creamy custard pours like liquid nostalgia, perfect over a warm sponge pudding or straight from the tin when no one's looking.

The rice pudding, meanwhile, offers that same creamy texture with soft grains of rice suspended throughout. Add a dollop of jam on top and you're instantly transported back to school dinners or Sunday tea at your nan's house.

Both are ridiculously easy – just heat and serve – making them the ultimate lazy pudding solution for any occasion.

    3. Spam

Originally created in America during the 1930s, Spam found a permanent home in British kitchens during wartime rationing and never quite left. This mystery meat in a tin gets a bad rap, but slice it thick, fry it until the edges crisp up, and it's genuinely tasty.

Some folks love it in a butty with a bit of brown sauce, whilst others chop it into chunks for a fry-up alongside eggs and beans. The salty, savoury flavour is oddly addictive, even if admitting you enjoy it feels a bit taboo.

It's cheap, lasts forever in the cupboard, and sorts you out when proper shopping hasn't happened in a while.

    4. Tinned Potatoes

Admitting you keep tinned spuds in the pantry might raise a few eyebrows, but these little spheres of convenience have saved countless dinners. Already peeled, cooked, and ready to go, they're brilliant when you've forgotten to buy fresh or simply can't face the peeling and boiling routine.

Drain them, toss them in a hot pan with a bit of butter, and they crisp up nicely on the outside whilst staying fluffy inside. They work perfectly alongside a Sunday roast when you're short on time or as a quick addition to stews and casseroles.

No, they're not quite the same as proper roasties, but they're surprisingly decent in a pinch.

    5. Heinz Spaghetti Hoops

Those little rings of pasta swimming in tangy tomato sauce have been a childhood favourite since 1965, and plenty of adults still sneak them when no one's judging. Spaghetti Hoops on toast is a quintessentially British meal, simple yet strangely satisfying after a long day.

The sauce is sweeter than your standard tomato sauce, which is part of the appeal, and the hoops themselves are perfectly soft and slurpable. Some people jazz them up with grated cheese or a fried egg on top, turning this humble tin into something almost restaurant-worthy.

It's quick, it's cheap, and it hits the spot when nothing else will do the trick.

    6. Tinned Corned Beef

Opening a tin of corned beef with that little key is a skill passed down through generations, though it still manages to go wrong half the time. This pressed beef product has been a British staple since the 19th century, originally fed to soldiers and sailors before finding its way into everyday kitchens.

Sliced cold in a sandwich with pickle and lettuce, it's brilliant for packed lunches or a quick tea. Fry it up with onions and potatoes for corned beef hash, and you've got a proper hearty meal that costs next to nothing.

It's salty, it's dense, and it divides opinion, but those who love it really love it.

    7. Tinned Mackerel

Oily fish straight from a tin might not sound glamorous, but mackerel in tomato sauce or brine is secretly adored by many Brits who'd never admit it at a dinner party. Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, it's one of the healthier tinned options, though that's not really why people love it.

The fish is soft, flavourful, and pairs brilliantly with crackers, toast, or even mashed into jacket potatoes for a quick, filling lunch. Mackerel in spicy tomato sauce adds a bit of zing, whilst the plain versions let the fish flavour shine through.

It's cheap, nutritious, and endlessly versatile, even if it does smell a bit fishy when you crack it open.

    8. Tinned Fruit

Peaches, pears, pineapple, and fruit cocktail in syrup have been brightening up British puddings for decades, even if fresh fruit snobs turn their noses up. There's something undeniably retro and comforting about cracking open a tin of fruit, draining off that sweet syrup, and spooning it into a bowl.

Tinned peaches with a dollop of cream or ice cream make a simple but delicious dessert, whilst pineapple rings are essential for a proper gammon steak presentation. Fruit cocktail, with its mix of cherries, grapes, and cubed fruit, feels like a party in a tin.

It's sweet, it's easy, and it lasts forever in the cupboard until pudding inspiration strikes.

    9. Tinned Soup

Heinz tomato soup is practically a national treasure, though admitting you prefer it from a tin rather than homemade might raise eyebrows among the foodie crowd. That smooth, slightly sweet tomato flavour is instantly recognisable and pairs perfectly with a buttered roll or toasted cheese sandwich for dunking.

Other varieties like chicken, vegetable, and mushroom also have their devoted followers, offering quick comfort on chilly days when cooking from scratch feels impossible. Just heat it up, pour it into a mug or bowl, and you're sorted in minutes.

It's the ultimate lazy lunch or light supper, beloved by students, busy parents, and anyone who values convenience over culinary snobbery.

    10. Tinned Meatballs

Meatballs in rich, savoury gravy come ready to heat in their tin, offering a surprisingly satisfying meal when you're too tired to cook properly. Brands like Princes and supermarket own-labels stock these little spheres of convenience, and they're far tastier than you'd expect from something so cheap and easy.

Serve them over mashed potato, pasta, or rice, and you've got a filling dinner that costs less than a quid per tin. The gravy is thick and meaty, coating everything beautifully, whilst the meatballs themselves are tender and flavourful.

It's the sort of meal you'd never serve to guests but happily devour alone on the sofa whilst watching telly.
