This Eating Habit Can Be An Early Sign Of Dementia

Changes in how someone eats can sometimes signal more than just a passing craving – they may point to early signs of certain types of dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a less common form affecting the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, can influence behaviour, personality, and even eating habits. Unlike other dementias, memory loss isn’t always the first warning sign.

In some cases, repetitive or obsessive behaviours around food may appear long before other symptoms.

Behavioural variant FTD can trigger unusual patterns around food. This may include hyperfixation on one type of food, refusal to eat anything else, or even attempting to eat non-food objects.

Such behaviours are linked to changes in the brain’s regulation of hunger, satiety, and impulse control.

Overeating, narrow food preferences, or compulsive eating can impact health and weight, and are important to recognise alongside other potential dementia symptoms.

Other Early Signs To Watch For

Food-related changes are just one part of the picture. FTD may also involve:

    • Personality and behaviour changes, such as impulsivity or neglect of personal hygiene
    • Language difficulties, including slow speech or incorrect word use
    • Challenges with planning, organisation, and concentration
    • Memory problems, usually emerging later than in Alzheimer’s disease
    • Physical issues, including muscle weakness, slow movement, or difficulty swallowing

If these behaviours appear, particularly when combined with unusual eating habits, it’s important to consult a GP. Early detection can make a significant difference in managing the condition.
