Remember the days when lunchtime meant simple sandwiches with familiar flavours? British cafés and sandwich shops once offered classic fillings that everyone loved and recognised.

Many of these traditional combinations have quietly disappeared from modern menus, replaced by trendy new options. Join us as we revisit these beloved sandwich fillings that once ruled the lunchbox scene.

This article is for general informational and nostalgic purposes only. Recipes, availability, and regional preferences may vary across the UK and over time.

School canteens and corner shops always stocked this quintessentially British combination. Chopped hard-boiled eggs mixed with mayonnaise created a creamy base, whilst fresh cress added a peppery crunch that balanced everything perfectly.

The filling was cheap to make and stayed fresh throughout the day. Though it seems old-fashioned now, this pairing represented simple, satisfying comfort food that required no fancy ingredients or complicated preparation techniques.

    2. Coronation Chicken

Created for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, this regal recipe became a lunchtime staple for decades. Tender chicken pieces bathed in curry-spiced mayonnaise with sultanas offered an exotic twist that felt special yet approachable.

Every supermarket and café featured their own version during the filling's heyday. The mild curry flavour appealed to British tastes without being too adventurous, making it a safe choice for office lunches and picnics alike.

    3. Cheese And Pickle

Nothing matched the tangy sweetness of Branston pickle against sharp cheddar cheese. This iconic pairing appeared in every pub and café across Britain, offering bold flavours that satisfied hungry workers during lunch breaks.

The chunky pickle texture contrasted beautifully with smooth, creamy cheese slices. Though still available today, it's nowhere near as popular as it once was, having lost ground to more modern sandwich combinations and international flavours.

    4. Ham And Mustard

Simple yet satisfying, this straightforward combination never tried to be anything fancy. Sliced ham with a generous smear of English mustard delivered a proper kick that woke up your taste buds during dreary lunch hours.

The sharpness of mustard cut through the saltiness of the ham brilliantly. Factory workers and office staff alike relied on this no-nonsense filling when they wanted something quick, filling, and reliably tasty without any fuss.

    5. Tuna Mayonnaise

Flaked tuna stirred into creamy mayo became a lunchbox hero throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The protein-packed filling was economical, easy to prepare in bulk, and didn't require refrigeration for a few hours.

Office workers kept tins of tuna in their desk drawers for emergency lunches. Whilst still available today, concerns about sustainability and overfishing have made many people reconsider this once-ubiquitous choice for their daily sandwiches.

Marie Rose sauce mixed with tiny prawns felt incredibly sophisticated during the 1970s and 1980s. The pink, tangy sauce made ordinary sandwiches seem fancy, perfect for special occasions or when you wanted to treat yourself at lunchtime.

Petrol stations and corner shops sold pre-packaged versions by the thousands. However, food safety concerns and the delicate nature of seafood eventually made this filling less practical for everyday sandwich consumption and mass production.

    7. Beef And Horseradish

Leftover Sunday roast beef found new life in Monday's sandwiches across Britain. Sliced thin and paired with fiery horseradish sauce, this combination brought restaurant-quality flavours to humble packed lunches everywhere.

The creamy heat of horseradish complemented the rich, savoury beef magnificently. Though still enjoyed occasionally, the decline of traditional Sunday roasts and concerns about processed meats have made this once-common filling increasingly rare in modern sandwich shops.

    8. Chicken And Stuffing

Christmas dinner leftovers inspired this festive-feeling combination that eventually became available year-round. Sliced chicken breast with sage and onion stuffing recreated holiday memories during ordinary weekdays, bringing comfort and nostalgia to every bite.

Sandwich shops capitalized on the popularity by offering it as a permanent menu item. Modern preferences for lighter, less carb-heavy options have pushed this hearty, traditional filling aside in favour of simpler chicken preparations.
