12 Grocery Items That Got Way More Expensive This Year

Your grocery budget feeling the pinch lately? You're not imagining it. Shopping trolleys are costing more to fill as food inflation continues to bite in 2025.

While some items have seen modest increases, others have jumped dramatically, putting pressure on household finances across Britain.

This article is for general informational purposes only. Prices and availability of grocery items may vary by region, retailer, and time.

Sweet treats are leaving a bitter taste when it comes to price tags. Chocolate bars and sharing bags now cost about 15% more than last summer.

The broader category including chocolates, jams and syrups is up 10% since August 2024. Weekend movie nights with favourite chocolatey snacks have become a pricier indulgence.

    2. Granulated Sugar

Baking enthusiasts face steeper costs for this kitchen essential. The sweet staple sits within a category that's risen roughly 10% year-on-year.

Home bakers are noticing the difference when stocking up on this basic ingredient. From cakes to cookies, sugar's price climb means homemade treats cost more to create than they did last August.

    3. Tea Bags

Britain's favourite brew costs more with each cuppa. The category covering tea jumped about 11% since last August, making our national comfort drink less comforting for wallets.

Standard tea bags have seen steady price creeps rather than dramatic spikes. Still, regular tea drinkers certainly notice the difference over weeks and months of daily cuppas.

    4. Coffee

Morning routines have become costlier affairs. Coffee lovers are paying approximately 11% more than last year for their favourite beans, grounds and instant jars.

Global supply challenges continue affecting prices on supermarket shelves. Whether you prefer fancy beans or basic instant, the caffeine kick comes with a bigger financial punch in 2025.

    5. Beef

Sunday roasts now come with eye-watering price tags. Beef has seen one of the most dramatic rises, soaring approximately 25% compared to August last year.

Everything from mince to premium cuts has jumped significantly. Supply constraints combined with strong demand have created the perfect storm for beef prices, making this protein a true budget-stretcher in 2025.

    6. Cheddar Cheese

The nation's favourite cheese demands more of our cheese budget now. While the broader dairy category rose about 4%, cheddar has been a particular driver of that increase.

Those blocks for sandwiches and cheese boards cost noticeably more. Cheese lovers are feeling the pinch whether buying basic varieties or splurging on aged cheddars.

    7. Butter

Spreading this dairy staple on toast now spreads your budget thinner too. Butter prices have surged dramatically – up around 19% compared to last August.

This increase far outpaces general food inflation. Whether for baking or breakfast, butter has become one of the most noticeable price jumpers in the dairy section, affecting everything from morning toast to homemade cakes.

    8. Milk

The humble four-pinter hasn't escaped price rises. Though more modest than other items, milk now costs roughly 4% more than it did a year ago.

Rising farm-gate prices eventually reach our shopping baskets. For families going through multiple bottles weekly, even this smaller percentage increase adds up over time, especially when combined with other grocery hikes.

    9. Eggs

The breakfast essential has cracked upward in price. Egg cartons cost 3-4% more than they did during the same period last year, according to agricultural statistics.

While not the most dramatic rise in your trolley, it's certainly noticeable. Morning fry-ups and baking projects require a slightly bigger budget now than they did in summer 2024.

    10. Bread

That staple loaf for sandwiches and toast requires more dough from shoppers. The bread and cereals category has risen approximately 4% since August last year.

While not the steepest increase, we buy bread so frequently that it impacts budgets significantly. Daily toast and lunchbox sandwiches mean families really notice this steady price creep over time.

    11. Fresh Fruit

Healthy eating costs more this year with fruit prices up 3.8% since last August. Shoppers are paying extra for everything from apples to berries.

While seasonal promotions still offer some relief, they're less generous than before. Fruit bowls and lunchbox snacks now take a bigger bite from the weekly shop compared to summer 2024.

    12. Fresh Vegetables

Vegetable prices have moved unevenly through the year, sometimes adding to inflation and other times easing it. In August 2025, the ONS recorded the “Vegetables Including Potatoes And Tubers” category as about 3.5% higher than in August 2024.

That figure captures the year-on-year change at that point in time, not a steady rise every month. For shoppers, it still meant salads and roast veg were costing a little more than they did the previous summer.
