The 1980s and ’90s were a golden age for British crisps – a time when bold flavours, quirky packaging, and unforgettable adverts ruled snack shelves.

From smoky beef favourites to tangy pickled onion puffs, these crisps became part of everyday life, tucked into lunchboxes and shared on school trips.

Many have since vanished, but they still hold a special place in the hearts of those who grew up crunching through Britain’s most iconic snack era.

This article is for general informational purposes only. Product availability, brand ownership, and flavour recipes may vary over time. Photos are for illustrative purposes only.

    1. Brannigans

Known for their thick ridges and bold flavours, Brannigans were considered a heavyweight in the crisp world. Beef and Mustard was the standout flavour, with Ham and Pickle also proving popular.

Each crisp was heavily seasoned, leaving a strong taste that lingered long after the packet was finished. Production ended in the early 2000s, though they remain a nostalgic favourite among fans.

    2. Tudor Crisps

Before Walkers became the dominant brand, Tudor Crisps were a household name. Their Cheese and Onion flavour was particularly sharp and distinctive, while the Salt and Vinegar variety was remembered for its strong tang.

With their crunchy texture and striking packaging, Tudors held a unique place in British snacking until Walkers acquired the brand and phased it out.

Quavers remain a popular crisp today, but their Salt and Vinegar version from the '80s is still remembered fondly. The light, curly crisps had a sharp, vinegary punch that stood out among competitors.

While Cheese Quavers are still widely available, many fans continue to recall the stronger flavour of this discontinued variety.

    4. Hedgehog Flavour

Walkers briefly released Hedgehog flavoured crisps as a marketing experiment. Despite the name, they didn’t contain hedgehog but instead offered a smoky, herby flavour that intrigued snackers at the time.

Controversy around the branding led to their withdrawal, but their unusual concept secured them a lasting place in crisp history.

    5. Fish 'n' Chips Flavour

Several brands attempted to capture the taste of Britain’s iconic dish in crisp form, with some managing a convincing combination of salty, vinegary flavours.

The best varieties were able to replicate the experience of traditional fish and chips, offering a unique twist on standard crisp flavours. Though some versions still exist, the original version from the 80s is no longer produced.

Shaped like flying saucers, KP Outer Spacers were released during the space craze of the '80s. The Pickled Onion flavour was particularly popular, offering a tangy kick.

Their distinctive shapes and playful branding made them memorable for children of the era. Despite their popularity, they were discontinued, and today they’re mostly remembered by nostalgic collectors.

    7. Football Crazy

Launched to coincide with football tournaments, Football Crazy crisps were decorated with sport-themed packaging and offered a variety of flavours.

They became especially popular among young fans during match season. Once the tournaments ended, so did the crisps, making them a limited but memorable part of snack history.

    8. Prawn Cocktail Wotsits

Wotsits experimented with a Prawn Cocktail flavour, combining their signature puffed texture with a seafood-inspired seasoning.

The flavour echoed the popular prawn cocktail starter and divided opinion among crisp fans. Although it didn’t last long on shelves, it remains one of the more unusual crisp experiments of the '90s.

These light, airy crisps were known for their delicate texture and bold seasoning. The Salt and Vinegar version stood out for its strong flavour despite the snack’s featherlight feel.

Marketed as a premium option, Potato Puffs eventually disappeared, though their unique combination of crunch and lightness is still remembered fondly.

    10. Discos Bacon Flavour

Discos Bacon Flavour crisps were a staple of every child's lunchbox during the '80s. Their unique, bold taste was unforgettable, with a crispy texture that kept fans coming back for more.

The distinctive bacon flavor was both savory and smoky, making it a favorite among those who loved a hearty snack. Their circular shape and satisfying crunch made them an exciting treat at any gathering.

Interestingly, these crisps were so popular that they often sparked debates about the best way to eat them. Whether you savored each one slowly or devoured them by the handful, Discos had a way of bringing people together over their shared love.

    11. Smith’s Bovril Crisps

Smith’s Bovril Crisps captured the hearts of many with their rich, beefy flavor. Infused with the essence of Bovril, a popular British beef extract, these crisps offered a taste that was both hearty and comforting.

The connection to Bovril, often enjoyed as a warming drink, made these crisps a familiar and beloved choice. Their robust taste was perfect for snack lovers seeking something substantial.

These crisps were renowned not just for their flavor but also for their nostalgic value, reminding many of cozy afternoons and simple pleasures. A true classic in the world of crisps, they remain remembered fondly.
