The 1990s saw McDonald’s experimenting with a wide range of menu items, many of which became favourites before disappearing from restaurants.

From burgers tied to film promotions to desserts that offered simple indulgence, these discontinued choices still hold a place in the memories of many customers.

This article is for general information only. Availability of menu items varied by region, and some may have been offered only for a limited time. Photos are illustrative and may not reflect exact products.

    1. McPizza

McDonald’s tested personal-sized pizzas with classic toppings such as pepperoni and vegetables.

While the crisp base and melted cheese were well received, the longer preparation time compared with other menu items made them impractical for fast service, leading to their withdrawal.

    2. Fried Apple Pie

Before the baked version was introduced, McDonald’s apple pies were fried, giving them a crisp, bubbly exterior.

Inside was a hot apple filling with cinnamon flavour. Many customers recall the distinctive texture, which set it apart from today’s alternatives.

The dipping sauces of the 1990s included barbecue, curry, and sweet and sour, alongside limited promotional flavours such as Szechuan.

These sauces added variety to the menu and encouraged customers to collect extras to use at home.

    4. Breakfast Bagel

Breakfast bagels were introduced as an alternative to McMuffins, with fillings such as bacon, sausage, or steak combined with egg and cheese.

The bagels had a chewy texture that appealed to commuters looking for a more substantial breakfast option.

    5. Chicken Legend

This sandwich featured a breaded chicken breast fillet served in a bakery-style roll with sauce options including mayo, barbecue, or hot and spicy.

It was seen as a more premium choice within the chicken range and remained popular until its removal years later.

    6. Ice Cream Sundaes

Sundaes in flavours such as strawberry, caramel, and hot fudge were served in clear plastic cups.

The combination of soft ice cream with generous sauce portions made them a popular dessert choice, often enjoyed alongside Happy Meals.

    7. McRib

The McRib consisted of a pork patty shaped to resemble ribs, covered in barbecue sauce, and topped with onions and pickles.

Its limited-time availability gave it a strong following, with customers often waiting for its return during promotional periods.

Despite founder Ray Kroc’s reluctance to introduce hot dogs, McHotDogs appeared in selected markets including the UK and Canada.

Served in steamed buns with standard condiments, they provided a seasonal novelty item but never became a permanent fixture.

    9. Super Hero Burger

Launched during film promotions in the mid-1990s, the Super Hero Burger featured three beef patties, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a special sauce.

The packaging often included comic book imagery, making it a popular choice for younger diners at the time.
