Every so often, you glance at a restaurant menu and realise something’s missing – that one dish you used to order without even thinking. Maybe it was a comfort classic, or perhaps a quirky special that never quite caught on. Some favourites vanished for good reason, while others left quietly, taking a little piece of culinary nostalgia with them.

This article is for general informational and nostalgic purposes only. Menu offerings, ingredients, and availability may vary by restaurant and region. Photos are for illustrative purposes only.

    1. Beefeater Mixed Grill

Once a firm favourite for anyone who couldn’t decide what to order, the Beefeater Mixed Grill was the definition of indulgence. It featured steak, gammon, sausages, chicken, a fried egg and chips - basically half the butcher’s shop on one plate.

Its quiet disappearance from several branches followed menu streamlining and the chain’s push for healthier, more modern pub dining options. Menu changes also aligned with evolving health trends and new regulations, leaving regulars nostalgic for this hearty pub classic.

    2. McDonald's Chicken Legend

The crispy, succulent chicken breast fillet that won over British hearts disappeared from menus in 2022. Loyal fans were left disappointed when this much-loved sandwich made way for the McCrispy.

McDonald’s described the change as part of its ongoing menu evolution - a move to refresh its classics while introducing new favourites. Despite its absence, the Chicken Legend still holds a fond place in many people’s memories.

    3. Wagamama Amai Udon

Sweet, sticky and utterly moreish, this coconut udon noodle dish had a dedicated following before vanishing from Wagamama’s menu boards. The sweet coconut and lemongrass broth made it uniquely indulgent.

It was removed as Wagamama introduced more plant-based dishes and simplified its menu, part of the chain’s ongoing effort to keep its offering fresh and relevant.

    4. Nando's Sweet Potato Wedges

Those perfectly crisp-yet-fluffy orange wedges were once the ultimate peri-peri companion. They added a touch of sweetness that balanced the spice beautifully.

Nando’s explained that the wedges were temporarily removed during a menu simplification period in 2020. Although the restaurant has introduced new side dishes since, many diners still remember the wedges as a comforting classic.

    5. Pizza Express Pollo Pesto

This creamy pasta dish was once a go-to comfort order for many diners. Made with penne pasta, tender chicken, mushrooms, and that signature basil pesto sauce, it was rich, satisfying, and perfectly balanced.

It quietly vanished during one of Pizza Express’s post-pandemic menu overhauls, believed to be part of a move toward lighter dishes and faster service. Many loyal customers still mention it online, hoping it might make a comeback one day.

    6. Pizza Hut Cheeseburger Crust Pizza

This daring creation combined two of Britain’s favourite indulgences - pizza and burgers - into one unforgettable dish. Each slice came with mini cheeseburgers baked right into the crust, complete with pickles and melted cheese.

Launched as a limited-edition item in 2013, it offered plenty of novelty value. However, its intricate preparation meant it was never destined to become a permanent fixture on the menu.

    7. Greggs Jam Doughnut (Original Recipe)

The original Greggs jam doughnut, with its generous filling and signature sugar coating, was a true bakery staple. Around the mid-2010s, regulars began noticing subtle changes to its texture and flavour.

The update was likely part of Greggs’ efforts to keep production consistent across its expanding range of stores. Even so, many long-time fans still talk fondly about the doughnuts they grew up with.

    8. Frankie & Benny's BBQ Pulled Pork Burger

This stacked burger was a fan favourite, featuring slow-cooked pulled pork piled high on a beef patty and finished with sticky barbecue sauce. It was big, bold, and unmistakably indulgent.

The dish was quietly retired during a menu update in 2019 as the chain focused on modernising its offerings and simplifying preparation in busy kitchens. It remains a nostalgic highlight for those who remember its smoky sweetness.

    9. Pret's Swedish Meatball Hot Wrap

Lunchtime queues once formed for Pret’s comforting Swedish Meatball Hot Wrap, complete with lingonberry sauce, rocket, and warm flatbread. Its hearty flavours made it a standout among the brand’s hot options.

The wrap was discontinued in 2018 when Pret streamlined its menu after a change in ownership, making space for lighter and plant-based dishes that reflected shifting customer preferences.

    10. Zizzi's Calzone Pollo Spinaci

This folded pizza, stuffed with chicken, spinach, mushrooms, and gooey mozzarella, was once one of Zizzi’s signature dishes. It combined Italian comfort with rustic presentation and was always satisfying to cut open at the table.

The calzone was removed around 2017 when Zizzi began refining its menu to improve efficiency and focus on dishes that travelled better for delivery. Fans still miss its generous filling and homely flavour.

    11. Subway Roast Beef Sub

The classic roast beef sub, packed with thinly sliced meat and perfect with a dash of horseradish, was once a reliable pick for customers wanting a simple, high-protein lunch.

It disappeared from UK menus in 2020 after global supply challenges and menu streamlining. While the sandwich later returned in some regions, it has yet to make a full comeback across Britain.

    12. Harvester Ribs & Chicken Combo

This hearty plate offered the best of both worlds - juicy grilled chicken and tender ribs glazed in the diner’s sauce of choice. It was the perfect sharer for family meals out.

When Harvester refreshed its menu in 2021, the combo was quietly phased out to make way for quicker, lighter dishes that suited changing dining habits. It remains one of the most talked-about classics among regular visitors.
