10 Pre-Packaged Foods That Waste Your Money At The Supermarket

Ever grabbed a pre-packaged snack without checking the price per gram? We've all fallen for clever marketing that empties our wallets faster than our stomachs.

Supermarkets are filled with convenience foods that cost way more than their homemade counterparts, often with added preservatives and less nutrition.

    Pre-Cut Fruit Containers

That plastic box of sliced pineapple or melon chunks costs up to five times more than buying the whole fruit. You're paying someone else to do 30 seconds of work with a knife!

The shelf life is dramatically shorter too. Fresh fruit begins losing nutrients once cut, meaning you're paying premium prices for less nutritional value.

    Grated Cheese Packets

A block of cheddar grated at home costs nearly half the price of those convenient pre-shredded bags. The packaged versions contain anti-caking agents and preservatives to prevent clumping.

Plus, freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly in cooking. With a basic grater, you'll have better-tasting food and more cash in your pocket.

    Instant Porridge Sachets

Those little packets of flavoured porridge might seem convenient but cost roughly four times more than buying plain oats. Most contain added sugar, artificial flavourings, and less actual oats than you'd use making it yourself.

A big bag of porridge oats with your own honey or fruit toppings works out much cheaper and healthier.

    Pre-Made Sandwich Wraps

Grabbing that meal deal wrap might seem like a bargain until you realise it costs about £3-4 for something that would cost pennies to make at home. The fillings are often sparse compared to what you'd add yourself.

Many contain preservatives to extend shelf life and the bread often becomes soggy by lunchtime.

    Bottled Salad Dressing

A basic bottle of salad dressing can cost £2-3 yet contains mostly oil, vinegar, and additives. Making your own takes literally seconds – mix olive oil, vinegar, and seasonings.

Homemade dressings taste fresher and you control exactly what goes in. No stabilisers, thickeners or mysterious ingredients you can't pronounce.

    Microwaveable Rice Pouches

Those convenient pouches of 'ready in 2 minutes' rice cost about four times more than cooking rice from scratch. While they save time, they're one of the biggest markup items in the grocery store.

A rice cooker or simple pot makes perfect rice with minimal effort. Cook extra and freeze portions for your own instant rice!

    Pre-Portioned Snack Packs

Mini packets of crisps, nuts or biscuits in multipack 'lunchbox sizes' charge a premium for less product. The per-gram cost can be nearly double compared to buying a standard size and dividing it yourself.

Invest in reusable small containers instead. You'll save money and reduce plastic waste while still enjoying portion control.

    Guacamole Tubs

Ready-made guacamole costs about three times more than mashing your own avocados with lime juice and seasoning. Many commercial versions contain minimal avocado and lots of fillers and preservatives.

Homemade takes just minutes and tastes infinitely fresher. You'll notice the difference immediately – both in flavour and your wallet!

    Pancake Mix Bottles

Those 'just add water' pancake mix bottles charge about four times the price of mixing flour, eggs and milk yourself. Some even make you add eggs anyway, making the convenience factor questionable at best!

Basic pancake ingredients cost pennies and the process takes barely a minute longer than using the mix.

    Chopped Vegetables Trays

Pre-chopped onions, peppers, and carrots cost up to three times more than buying whole vegetables. They also spoil faster since cutting breaks cell walls and exposes more surface area to bacteria.

Spend 10 minutes on weekend prep instead. Chop vegetables yourself and store them properly for quick weekday cooking without the premium price tag.
