Some of the UK’s best-loved snacks are so unique that they leave visitors baffled and expats homesick. From chocolate-covered biscuits and cheesy crisps to odd but irresistible pub favourites, these treats define British snacking culture.

Whether you’re after something sweet with your cuppa or a savoury bite to go with your pint, these classics prove that the UK does comfort food in its own unmistakable way.

Golden shortbread biscuits with a heart-shaped window filled with raspberry or strawberry jam have been a favourite since 1960.

Burton’s Biscuit Company created them as a playful twist on traditional jam tarts, and their name was inspired by a comic character, Roger the Dodger. They’re as popular for dunking in tea as they are for eating straight from the packet.

    2. Hobnobs

Launched in 1985, McVitie’s Hobnobs quickly became a household staple. Their chunky oat and wholemeal base provides a hearty crunch, while chocolate-coated versions add indulgence.

Known for their strength, Hobnobs are among the few biscuits that hold up perfectly when dunked into hot tea.

    3. Jaffa Cakes

Since 1927, Jaffa Cakes have stirred debate over whether they’re cakes or biscuits. Technically cakes, they feature a light sponge base, orange-flavoured jelly, and a coating of dark chocolate.

Their combination of textures makes them uniquely British, and fans have long devised creative ways to eat them, from nibbling the chocolate first to saving the jelly centre for last.

    4. Flake

Cadbury’s Flake, created in 1920, is famous for its crumbly, layered structure. Made by folding liquid chocolate into thin sheets, it melts smoothly yet breaks apart at the lightest touch.

Traditionally, a Flake is pushed into a soft-serve cone to create the iconic “99” ice cream still found at seaside resorts and summer fairs.

    5. Crunchie

Introduced in 1929, Cadbury’s Crunchie combines golden honeycomb with a coating of milk chocolate. The aerated centre shatters satisfyingly with each bite, leaving a lingering sweetness.

The slogan “Thank Crunchie It’s Friday” cemented its place in British workplace culture and made it a symbol of weekend indulgence.

    6. Maltesers

Since 1936, Maltesers have offered a lighter take on chocolate snacking. Their malted honeycomb centres dissolve quickly, leaving a creamy chocolate coating.

They’re sold in boxes and bags that make them ideal for sharing at the cinema or enjoying during a quiet evening at home.

First launched in 1929, Jacob’s Twiglets are crunchy wheat snacks flavoured with yeast extract, giving them a Marmite-like savouriness.

Their twisted shapes add to the novelty, though their bold flavour splits opinion. They remain popular at parties and pubs, often appearing alongside crisps and nuts.

    8. Monster Munch

With claw-shaped corn puffs in flavours such as Pickled Onion, Roast Beef, and Flamin’ Hot, Monster Munch has been entertaining snackers since 1977.

Their playful branding and bold tastes make them a favourite with children and nostalgic adults alike. The oversized shapes add to the fun, often worn on fingers before being eaten.

Pork scratchings are a crunchy delight made from pig skin, seasoned to perfection. It's a staple in British pubs, often enjoyed with a pint of beer.

Each bite is a savory explosion, appealing to those who love bold, salty snacks. The rich flavor and texture make it a uniquely satisfying experience.
