Remember when your pocket money could buy a proper treat at the corner shop? British kids of the 80s and 90s enjoyed a golden era of snacking that today's youngsters might never experience.

These iconic treats weren't just food – they were childhood currency, playground status symbols, and the cause of sticky fingers nationwide.

This article is for nostalgic interest only. Snack availability and branding varied by region and time, so not every item will be familiar to all readers.

    1. Wagon Wheels

Massive marshmallow sandwiches that somehow felt bigger than your face as a kid! These chocolate-covered circular treats featured a layer of jam between biscuit and marshmallow that made every bite an adventure.

Despite everyone insisting they've shrunk over the years, the manufacturers swear they haven't. Perhaps we've just grown up?

    2. Penguin Bars

The chocolate biscuit that came with its own joke! Unwrapping that foil to reveal the shiny chocolate-covered biscuit was a moment of pure joy during school lunchtimes.

Parents would pack these as the posh alternative to regular chocolate bars. The terrible puns printed inside made you groan but secretly smile.

    3. Club Bars (Fruit, Mint, And Orange flavours)

Remember the adverts? "If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit, join our Club." These foil-wrapped treasures came in distinctive flavours that divided playground opinion.

Orange was the undisputed champion, with mint coming a close second. The fruit version somehow always ended up at the bottom of the biscuit tin, waiting for desperate times.

    4. Monster Munch

Claw-shaped corn snacks that turned your fingers a suspicious shade of red, blue or green. The pickled onion flavour was the brave kid's choice, clearing personal space in the playground instantly!

Everyone had their own way of eating them – some nibbled the monster's fingers first, others went straight for the palm.

    5. Hula Hoops

These potato hoops sparked endless playground fashion shows with ten crispy rings adorning sticky fingers.

Original salted was the classic, but Salt and Vinegar had that face-scrunching tang that left your lips smarting. The Ready Salted multipack always disappeared first, leaving BBQ lonely at the bottom.

    6. Space Raiders

Alien-shaped corn snacks that cost just 10p for what felt like ages! These pickled onion or beef flavoured treats came in packets featuring menacing extraterrestrials that were almost as fun as the snack itself.

The real joy was finding an especially well-formed alien face and showing it off before crunching it to oblivion.

    7. Quavers

These cheese-flavoured wisps disappeared almost as soon as you put them in your mouth, leaving you wondering if you'd actually eaten anything at all.

The magic was in that distinctive cheesy tang that lingered long after the crisp had vanished. Perfect for pretending to be a dragon breathing cheesy fire!

    8. Chipsticks

Skinny salt and vinegar sticks that delivered a flavour punch way above their weight class! These thin potato snacks were the sharpest vinegar hit available to a child of the 80s and 90s.

Eating a whole packet would leave your tongue feeling like sandpaper. The small packets seemed to contain hundreds of the little sticks – proper value for pocket money!

    9. Skips

Prawn cocktail-flavoured magic that fizzed on your tongue! These light, melty snacks created a strange tingling sensation that was half the fun of eating them.

The pink packets were unmistakable in the playground. Remember holding them on your tongue until they completely dissolved? No other crisp disappeared quite so satisfyingly.

    10. Taz Bars

Caramel-filled chocolate bars featuring the Looney Tunes Tasmanian Devil! These were essentially Freddo's caramel-filled cousin, but with added cartoon attitude.

Eventually replaced by Caramel Freddos in the early 2000s, Taz bars remain a true marker of British 90s childhood. Remember when they cost just 10p? Highway robbery at today's prices!

    11. Toffos

Chewy toffee squares that threatened to remove fillings with every bite! These individually wrapped treats came in original toffee, mint, fruit, and assorted varieties.

The distinctive yellow packaging with red lettering was a staple of corner shops everywhere. Opening one required genuine commitment – they stuck to teeth with superglue tenacity!

    12. Fruit Salad & Black Jack Chews

The dynamic duo of penny sweets! Fruit Salads were pink and yellow squares of pineapple and raspberry flavoured chew, while Black Jacks delivered aniseed punch in a distinctive black wrapper.

These chewy classics turned your tongue either rainbow bright or alarmingly black. Best of all, they actually cost a penny each for decades!

    13. Refreshers

Fizzy, sherbet-filled chews that made your face pucker! These fruity tablets came in rolls with flavours like lemon, lime, and orange, each delivering a zingy, effervescent surprise.

The sherbet centre would start popping as soon as you bit down. Playground legends claimed the fizz could make your head explode if you ate too many at once.

    14. Sherbet Dip Dab

The interactive sweet that doubled as a sugary science experiment! A paper packet filled with zingy sherbet powder and a flat lollipop for dipping created the perfect sweet-sour combination.

Licking the lolly, dipping in sherbet, then tasting the fizzing result was pure childhood magic. The brave kids skipped the lolly altogether and poured sherbet straight onto their tongues!

    15. Flumps

Twisted marshmallow ropes in pastel colours that stretched forever! These super-sweet treats were surprisingly tough to bite through, making them last longer than most penny sweets.

The pink, yellow and blue twisted together created a sugar rush that had parents wincing. Some kids unravelled them completely before eating, while others took massive bites of all three colours at once.
