6. Smarties Pop-Up Ice Cream
The mechanical marvel of the ice cream world – push the bottom and watch more treat magically appear! Vanilla ice cream studded with mini Smarties came in a cardboard tube with a plastic plunger that made eating it half treat, half toy.
The engineering often failed spectacularly, resulting in ice cream explosions or stuck mechanisms. Yet somehow this just added to the chaotic fun of the whole experience.
7. Character Face Pops
Grotesquely misshapen faces with gumball eyes that never quite matched the picture on the wrapper – these were the stuff of childhood dreams and adult nightmares. From Sonic to Spider-Man, these character lollies promised recognition but delivered delicious horror.
The ritual of saving the gumball eyes until last was sacred. Many friendships were formed over comparing which celebrity or cartoon character your ice cream most definitely did not resemble.
