How To Store Basil For A Week

Basil is a fragrant and versatile herb that adds a burst of flavour to many dishes, from pasta sauces to salads.

However, it can wilt quickly if not stored properly. With a few simple techniques, you can keep your basil fresh for up to a week, ensuring every meal benefits from its vibrant taste.

This content is for general information only. Freshness of herbs may vary depending on storage conditions. Photos are illustrative and may not reflect exact results.

Treat basil like a bouquet of flowers. Trim the stems and place them in a glass of water, making sure the leaves stay above the water line.

Cover the top loosely with a plastic bag and leave it on the counter, away from direct sunlight. This method helps the basil stay hydrated and prevents wilting.

    Refrigerate With Care

If you prefer to refrigerate your basil, wrap the leaves gently in a slightly damp paper towel and place them in a sealed container.

This method reduces moisture loss and keeps the leaves crisp. Avoid storing basil in airtight plastic bags without ventilation, as condensation can cause the leaves to turn black.

    Freeze For Longer Storage

For those who want to extend basil’s shelf life beyond a week, freezing is an excellent option. Chop the leaves and place them in an ice cube tray with a little water or olive oil.

Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer-safe bag. These frozen basil cubes are perfect for adding directly to soups, sauces, and stews.

    Keep Leaves Whole When Possible

Whole basil leaves retain their flavour better than chopped ones. Only tear or chop leaves when you’re ready to use them. This preserves the essential oils that give basil its distinctive aroma.

With these tips, fresh basil can last longer and continue enhancing your favourite dishes with its aromatic flavour.
