10 Dieting Trends Experts Say Are Not Worth Your Time

Fad diets pop up constantly, promising quick results with minimal effort. These trends often gain popularity through celebrity endorsements or social media buzz. But nutrition experts regularly caution against many popular dieting approaches that might waste your time, harm your health, or simply don't deliver sustainable results.

This article is for general informational purposes only and should not replace personalised medical or dietary advice. Nutrition guidance varies depending on individual health needs, lifestyle, and medical history. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian before making significant changes to your diet.

    1. Carnivore Diet

A meat-only approach that eliminates all plant foods. Nutritionists worry about the complete absence of fibre, antioxidants and phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables.

The extreme restriction makes this diet nearly impossible to maintain long-term and potentially harmful to gut health.

    2. Whole30

Marketed as a month-long reset, this programme cuts out grains, dairy, legumes, sugar and more.

While eliminating processed foods can be beneficial, Whole30's arbitrary food rules lack scientific backing. Many nutritionists argue it creates unhealthy food relationships and doesn't teach sustainable eating habits after the 30 days end.

    3. Stillman Diet

This low-carb, high-protein plan became popular in the 1960s. Its severe restrictions leave little room for variety or flexibility.

Nutrition experts warn that the approach may increase the risk of dehydration and nutrient gaps, making it unsuitable for long-term health.

    4. Sirtfood Diet

Famous for allowing dark chocolate, this plan focuses on foods thought to activate so-called "skinny genes." The initial phase restricts calories to about 1,000 a day while emphasising foods like kale and buckwheat.

Research on these claims remains limited, making the restrictive approach questionable.

    5. Extreme Keto

This version of keto pushes fat intake to very high levels, sometimes 80–90% of calories.

While some ketogenic approaches may help under medical guidance, the extreme form can increase the risk of nutrient gaps and uncomfortable side effects such as fatigue, constipation, and the well-known “keto breath.”

    6. Dukan Diet

Structured in four phases, this protein-heavy plan begins with almost no carbohydrates. The strict rules and focus on protein make it difficult to follow for long.

Experts caution that the restrictive nature may cause digestive discomfort and lead to unbalanced eating habits.

    7. Raw Food Diet

Proponents believe eating only uncooked foods preserves more nutrients. In reality, the body produces its own digestive enzymes, and cooking can even increase availability of some nutrients such as in tomatoes and carrots.

While it encourages plenty of fresh produce, the raw approach also raises food safety concerns and can feel restrictive socially.

    8. Supplement Or Shake-Based Plans

Meal replacement programmes promise convenience and precise nutrition through powders and pills.

The problem? Real food contains thousands of beneficial compounds that supplements can't replicate. These plans rarely teach sustainable eating habits, leading to weight regain once regular food returns. Many also contain excessive sugar or artificial ingredients.

    9. Restrictive Elimination Diets

Removing multiple food groups without medical necessity has become trendy.

Unless you have diagnosed allergies or intolerances, arbitrarily cutting out foods like gluten, dairy and soy lacks scientific justification. Such restriction can create nutritional gaps and unhealthy food relationships while making social eating unnecessarily difficult.

    10. Celebrity "Instant Transformation" Diets

Diets promoted by celebrities often promise dramatic results, but behind the scenes they usually involve personal chefs, trainers, and routines that are unrealistic for most people.

These plans typically rely on strict calorie cuts that can slow progress over time and are difficult to maintain, especially without professional support.
