There’s something comforting about the desserts our grandparents enjoyed, especially the ones that filled family kitchens long before modern treats took over.

Many of those old recipes carry a kind of charm that comes from simple ingredients and the cosy routines of another era. A closer look at some of these classics might even inspire you to try a sweet you’ve never tasted before.

Golden syrup creates the sticky, sweet filling that makes this tart unforgettable. Breadcrumbs mixed into the treacle give it a unique texture that's both gooey and slightly firm.

The lattice pastry on top adds a beautiful pattern whilst letting the golden filling peek through. Served warm with custard or cream, it's pure comfort in every bite, reminding many of Sunday dinners at Nan's house.

Suet pastry rolled around bright red jam creates this cheerful spiral dessert. Steamed until fluffy, the pastry becomes light and tender, whilst the jam stays gloriously sweet and sticky.

Slicing through reveals the pretty swirl pattern that made children's eyes light up at teatime.

Three distinct layers make this pudding royally impressive. Breadcrumbs soaked in flavoured milk form the base, topped with a generous spread of jam, then crowned with fluffy meringue.

The meringue gets toasted until golden peaks form, creating a texture contrast that's simply divine. Originally created to use up leftover bread and egg whites, it became fancy enough to serve at proper tea parties.

Tiny pearls of tapioca create an unusual texture that children either loved or found peculiar. Cooked slowly in sweetened milk, the pearls turn translucent and soft, creating a pudding unlike anything modern.

Some kids nicknamed it "frogspawn" because of its appearance, though the taste is actually quite pleasant and mild. Flavoured with vanilla or topped with jam, it provided simple sweetness after wartime rationing ended.

    5. Semolina Pudding

Wheat semolina cooked in milk creates this smooth, porridge-like dessert that divided opinions at school dinners. The texture sits somewhere between custard and porridge, thick enough to hold a spoon upright.

A dollop of jam stirred through adds colour and sweetness to the pale pudding. Though many children pulled faces at it, others remember it fondly as warming comfort on cold afternoons.

Stewed apples hide beneath a light sponge topping in this clever two-layer pudding. As it bakes, the sponge rises whilst the fruit below turns soft and jammy, creating wonderful contrasts.

Named after the biblical Eve and her famous apple, it's been warming British homes for generations. The combination of tart fruit and sweet cake makes it less heavy than other traditional puds, perfect year-round.
