Getting enough protein doesn't have to drain your wallet. With food prices constantly rising, many Brits are feeling the pinch at checkout. The good news? Plenty of protein-packed options won't break the bank.

These budget-friendly powerhouses will keep both your muscles and bank account happy.

    1. Eggs

The humble egg is practically a nutritional superhero in disguise. A box of six free-range beauties costs less than a fancy coffee these days. Perfect for breakfast scrambles, adding to fried rice, or making a proper quiche for Sunday lunch.

One large egg packs about 6-7 grams of complete protein!

    2. Canned Tuna

Lurking in cupboards across Britain, this tinned treasure offers serious bang for your buck. At roughly 30p per serving, it's practically giving protein away!

Mix with a dollop of light mayo for a sandwich filling, toss into pasta, or top a jacket potato. Each small tin delivers around 25 grams of lean protein.

    3. Lentils

These tiny nutritional powerhouses have been feeding Brits since they became popular during post-war rationing. A 500g bag costs pennies and seems to multiply like magic when cooked.

Red ones disappear wonderfully into soups, while green varieties hold their shape for hearty salads. Half a cup provides roughly 9 grams of plant protein.

    4. Chickpeas

Not just for hummus! These versatile little legumes have been quietly revolutionizing British home cooking since curry became our national dish. Roast them crispy for snacking, toss into curries, or mash for sandwich fillings.

A standard tin costs under 60p and delivers about 15 grams of protein, plus loads of filling fiber.

    5. Tofu

Once considered exotic, this soya-based staple now graces supermarket shelves nationwide. A 400g block costs about the same as a fancy coffee shop pastry. Firm varieties work brilliantly stir-fried or grilled, while silken types blend seamlessly into smoothies.

Half a block provides roughly 20 grams of complete plant protein.

    6. Peanut Butter

The childhood sandwich filler that's actually a nutritional powerhouse! British cupboards have embraced this American import wholeheartedly. Look for varieties without added sugar or palm oil.

Two tablespoons deliver about 8 grams of protein, plus healthy fats that keep hunger at bay far longer than a packet of crisps.

    7. Chicken Thighs

While chicken breasts get all the glory, thighs are the real budget hero. Typically half the price of their breast counterparts, these juicier cuts are practically foolproof to cook.

Roast them with lemon and herbs, slow-cook in a curry, or pop on the BBQ when the sun makes its rare British appearance. A single thigh provides about 10 grams of protein.

    8. Cottage Cheese

Forget the 1980s diet food reputation – this humble dairy product deserves a modern comeback! At around £1.20 for a tub, it's far cheaper than those trendy protein yogurts.

Brilliant on toast with a bit of black pepper, mixed into scrambled eggs, or topped with pineapple for a proper retro pudding. Half a cup provides approximately 14 grams of protein.

    9. Black Beans

While not traditionally British, these Mexican staples have found their way into our shopping trolleys for good reason. A tin costs less than a pound and expands to feed an army. Brilliant in chillies, burritos, or mashed into veggie burgers.

Half a cup provides around 8 grams of plant protein along with enough fiber to keep things moving properly.

    10. Greek Yogurt

The thick, creamy cousin of regular yogurt that's worth the slight price premium. Even the posh brands cost less than those tiny protein drinks at the gym.

Lovely with honey and fruit for breakfast, as a tangy replacement for sour cream, or in marinades for meat. A single serving packs around 15-20 grams of protein.

    11. Frozen Fish

Fish fingers aren't just for kids! The freezer section hides proper protein bargains that won't go off before you remember to use them.

White fish like pollock and coley cost far less than cod but work brilliantly in fish pies or with chips. Oily varieties like mackerel provide heart-healthy omega-3s too. A typical fillet provides around 20 grams of protein.
