12 Maryland Restaurants That Stay Packed Without Ever Advertising

A milkshake that weighs six pounds. Hot dogs wrapped in fried bologna.

Pit beef sliced in a parking lot. None of these places needs a billboard, and somehow the tables still fill up.

Maryland has a funny habit of hiding its busiest kitchens in odd corners. One sits on a quiet farm road with endless sides.

Another overlooks a marina with old riverboats bobbing nearby. A few seat you at tables covered in brown paper, ready for a pile of steamed crabs.

You won't find slick ads pushing you toward them. You'll find a line, a parking lot that fills fast on Saturday, and plates that explain the fuss.

It's the kind of popularity money can't really buy.

So what keeps people driving back, week after week, with no jingle stuck in their heads? Mostly the food.

Partly the view. And sometimes a dessert bar you'll still be thinking about on the ride home.

    1. Chick & Ruth's Delly

Any diner that offers a six-pound milkshake clearly isn't playing it safe. Chick and Ruth's Delly sits right on Main Street in Annapolis, and it leans hard into big.

The walls are lined with photos of celebrities and sports legends. The look is pure 1950s diner deli, with a Maryland twist on the menu.

Breakfast starts early, at 6:30 in the morning, every day of the week. You can order poached eggs, chicken and waffles, or the Annapolis Cheese Steak Omelet.

Lunch leans toward piled-high sandwiches. The Double Pastrami and Swiss is a heavy hitter, and the Crab Cake Sandwich keeps things local.

Hungry for both land and sea? The Fried Shrimp and Crab Cake platter covers that wish nicely.

Then there are the milkshakes, which might be the real stars here. Moose Tracks is a sweet pick, and the vanilla malt has its own fans.

Plan around the crowds if you can. Saturday afternoon into evening is the busiest stretch, and reservations aren't taken.

Parking downtown can be tricky, so a garage may save you some circling. Weeknights after dinner tend to be calmer.

Address: 165 Main St, Annapolis, MD 21401

    2. The PaperMoon Diner

Somewhere in Baltimore, a bacon milkshake is waiting for someone brave. That someone could be you, at The PaperMoon Diner.

The room is packed with knickknacks, and the mood is wonderfully strange. It feels like a toy box decided to open a restaurant.

Don't let the decor distract you from the menu, though. It's huge, with burgers, traditional breakfast plates, and plenty for plant-based eaters.

Vegetarians get a full menu here, and vegans do too. That makes it an easy pick for a mixed group with different tastes.

Sweet tooth? Try the Banana Foster French Toast or the Vanilla Custard French Toast.

Bread pudding is another dessert worth a spot on the table.

For something savory, the Shrimp and Grits come with a tasso-ham sauce. The Moo Moo Quesadilla is fun to order out loud, too.

Weekend mornings bring the biggest crowds, and there are no reservations. Friday evening tends to be the quiet window.

Kids are welcome, with high chairs and a kids' menu ready. The doors stay closed Monday and Tuesday, so plan your visit for later in the week.

    Address: 227 W 29th St, Baltimore, MD 21211

    3. Cantler's Riverside Inn

    Cantler's Riverside Inn

Sailboats drift by while you crack crabs, and nobody seems in a hurry to leave. Cantler's Riverside Inn sits right on the water outside Annapolis.

The setting feels old-school in the best way. Think rustic room, a deck by the river, and Maryland seafood front and center.

Blue crabs are the big draw, of course. Steamed crabs pair well with a basket of clam strips or a plate of littleneck clams.

Want a snack while you wait? Crab Dip and the Crab Pretzel make an easy start.

Steamers and mussels round out the shellfish list. Chicken wings are there for anyone who'd rather skip the shells.

Here's the catch: there's usually a wait, and reservations aren't taken. Saturday afternoon and evening bring the heaviest crowds.

Dogs are allowed outside, so your four-legged buddy can enjoy the breeze too. Kids get high chairs and their own menu.

Curbside pickup is offered if the line looks long. Still, eating by the water is half the reason to go, so try a weekday lunch for a calmer table.

Address: 458 Forest Beach Rd, Annapolis, MD 21409

    4. Friendly Farm Restaurant

Unlimited sides on a farm road might be the best deal in Baltimore County. Friendly Farm Restaurant sits off the beaten path in rural Upperco.

It's an old-fashioned dining hall with classic family-style American meals. Platters land on the table, and everyone passes them around.

Can't decide between land and sea? The menu pairs Crab Cakes and Fried Chicken, which settles that argument fast.

Fried jumbo shrimp and filet mignon also show up on the menu. Dinner rolls and sugar rolls make the bread basket hard to ignore.

The country setting does a lot of the work here. Fields and farm views give the meal a slower, easy pace.

Large groups and family gatherings fill the room often. A private dining room helps when the crowd gets big.

Reservations are accepted, which is smart on weekends. Saturday and Sunday afternoons into evening are the busiest times.

Hours run from noon to 7 PM, Wednesday through Sunday. Monday and Tuesday it's closed, so check your calendar before the drive.

Kids have their own menu and high chairs.

Address: 17434 Foreston Rd, Upperco, MD 21155

    5. Baugher's Restaurant

    Baugher's Restaurant

Pie made with fruit from the family's own orchard is a hard thing to compete with. Baugher's Restaurant in Westminster knows that well.

It's a no-frills spot with down-home American food. The room has a small-town feel that fits its historic Main Street address.

Orchard produce shapes the menu through the seasons. Apples, peaches, strawberries, pumpkin, and tomatoes all play a part.

Comfort plates are the core here. The Turkey Dinner is a classic, and liver and onions still has loyal fans.

Then come the pies, which many guests save room for. Dessert is a highlight, so maybe order a slice before you're full.

Breakfast starts at 7:30 in the morning, every day. Lunch and dinner follow, with doors closing at 8 PM.

Weekend mornings and afternoons get the busiest. Reservations aren't taken, so arrive early or hit a Monday or Tuesday evening.

Families will find high chairs and a kids' menu. A private dining room also works for bigger groups, and parking is usually easy to find.

Address: 289 W Main St, Westminster, MD 21158

    6. Mountain Gate Family Restaurant

Shoo fly pie and scrapple on one menu tell you exactly where you are. Mountain Gate Family Restaurant sits in Thurmont, a mountain gateway town in Frederick County.

It's a large, family-run place with a buffet and a full menu. Down-home country cooking is the whole idea.

The buffet is all you can eat, with a salad bar on the side. Fried chicken gets plenty of attention, and servings run big.

Prefer to order? Roast Turkey with Dressing and the Chicken Salad Club are solid choices.

The Truckers Breakfast is built for a serious morning appetite.

Save some space for the dessert section, which is huge. Apple pie and shoo fly pie both make the menu.

Holidays get special treatment, too. A Thanksgiving buffet brings sliced meats, homemade sides, and plenty of cakes and pies.

Doors open at 8 AM daily and close at 8 PM. Saturday afternoon and evening, plus Sunday afternoon, see the biggest crowds.

Reservations are accepted, which helps with larger groups. A private dining room is available, and kids get their own menu.

Address: 133 Frederick Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788

    7. Penn Alps Restaurant & Craft Shop

Lunch and a handmade gift under one roof sounds like a smart Sunday. Penn Alps Restaurant and Craft Shop sits in the hills of Grantsville, in rural Garrett County.

The restaurant has a rustic setting and a fireplace. Next door, a craft shop sells work by local artisans.

Home-style cooking runs the menu. Cabbage rolls, the Penn Alps Reuben, and French onion soup are a few standouts.

Craving pure comfort? The roast beef sandwich comes with mashed potatoes and gravy.

A soup and salad bar keeps lighter eaters happy. Vegetarians also have a full menu to choose from.

Weekends bring a buffet on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday afternoon is the busiest time of the week here.

Dessert deserves a mention, too. Nut Brown Pudding is an old-fashioned treat you won't spot on many menus.

Tea fans get a nice selection, and the coffee is a highlight. Free Wi-Fi is available if you need to check directions for the next stop.

Reservations are accepted, and hours run 11 AM to 8 PM daily. Parking is usually easy.

Address: 125 Casselman Rd, Grantsville, MD 21536

    8. Chaps Pit Beef Baltimore

Some of Baltimore's most famous beef comes from a stand in a parking lot.

Chaps Pit Beef doesn't care about fancy surroundings. The focus is the pit beef sandwich, tender and slightly charred with a smoky flavor.

Guy Fieri featured this original spot on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. That kind of buzz travels far without a single ad.

Pit beef is a Baltimore specialty, so this is a great place to try it. Add Tiger Sauce for a little kick.

A condiment bar lets you dress your sandwich your way. Want a platter instead?

The Beef Platter brings more meat and sides.

Pulled pork, a Reuben, and a cheeseburger are also on the menu. Fries with gravy make a messy, happy side.

Service is counter-style, and there's outdoor seating too. Friday and Saturday afternoons into evening get the busiest.

Hours run 10:30 AM to 9 PM daily. Parking is usually easy, which helps when the line stretches out.

Address: 720 Mapleton Ave, Baltimore, MD 21205

    9. Attman's Delicatessen

A hot dog wrapped in fried bologna is the kind of idea that wins you over fast. Attman's Delicatessen serves it on Baltimore's historic Corned Beef Row.

This is a New York-style Jewish deli. Corned beef and pastrami sandwiches come stacked high and hearty.

Not sure where to start? Hot Pastrami is a classic, and the Attman's Specialty Reuben is a strong runner-up.

The Attman's World Famous Jewish Hot Dog is that bologna-wrapped wonder. Crispy and bold, it's an order you'll tell friends about.

Feeling under the weather? Mamma's Chicken Noodle Soup is right there on the menu.

Desserts hold their own, too. Chocolate eclairs are big enough to share with a small crowd.

Love the mustard? You can buy a jar of Attman's Original Deli Mustard to take home.

There's usually a wait, especially weekday afternoons. Service is at the counter, so lines tend to move with purpose.

Hours run 8 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Saturday. Sunday closes earlier, at 4 PM, so plan a lunch rather than a late dinner.

Address: 1019 E Lombard St, Baltimore, MD 21202

    10. Woody's Crab House

Brown paper on the table means one thing: things are about to get messy. Woody's Crab House in North East is ready for it.

This spacious spot sits on Main Street in a small waterside town in Cecil County. Locally sourced steamed crabs are the headliners.

Crab fans can go many directions here. Soft shell crabs, crab cakes, and Maryland Crab Soup all make strong cases.

Want something creamy? The Crab Bisque is a cozy bowl on a chilly day.

Fun starters include crispy Baltimore-style Crab Balls and Crabby Fries. Coconut shrimp and fresh half shell oysters round out the list.

Big appetite tonight? Crab Cake and Stuffed Lobster brings two favorites to one plate.

Don't skip dessert, because the carrot cake has a loyal following. It's a sweet way to end a crab feast.

Outdoor seating lets you eat along the street on nice days. Dogs are allowed outside, too.

Reservations are accepted, and Saturday afternoon into evening is the peak. Parking can be tricky downtown, so give yourself a few extra minutes.

Address: 29 S Main St, North East, MD 21901

    11. The Crab Claw

Smith Island Cake after a pile of steamed crabs is about as Maryland as dessert gets. The Crab Claw serves both by the water in St. Michaels.

This casual landmark crab shack sits in a historic Eastern Shore harbor town. Outdoor tables look right over the Miles River.

Maryland Blue Crabs are the main event. Big, fresh crabs on a waterfront table make a lovely weekend plan.

Craving variety? The Chesapeake Bay Seafood Sampler covers a lot of ground in one order.

Cream of Crab Soup and Crab Dip are easy starters. Oysters on the half shell also show up on the menu.

Stuffed rockfish and crab cakes keep fork-and-knife fans happy. Onion rings make a crunchy side.

Dogs are allowed inside and outside, which is a rare treat. Families get high chairs, changing tables, and a kids' menu.

Ice cream is another sweet option if cake feels like too much. Reservations are accepted, and parking is usually easy.

It's closed on Tuesdays. Other days, hours run 11 AM to 8 PM.

Address: 304 Burns St, St Michaels, MD 21663

    12. Waterman's Crab House

Steamed crabs taste better with the Chesapeake Bay right in front of you. Waterman's Crab House makes that happen in Rock Hall.

This small watermen's town sits on the Upper Eastern Shore. The restaurant offers dockside seats with wide water views.

The famous Waterman's crab cakes are all lump crab. Steamed Maryland Blue Crabs share the spotlight.

Not a crab cracker? Shrimp tacos, fish tacos, and fish and chips are easy alternatives.

Seafood Norfolk is a local favorite style worth trying. Hush puppies and crab dip make friendly starters.

Vegetarians aren't left out, either. There's a full vegetarian menu, and the kitchen can prepare meatless dishes.

Crab stuffed rockfish is another standout plate. A prime rib buffet has also been part of the lineup.

Live music and sports on TV keep things fun. Dogs are welcome, and kids get their own menu.

Reservations are accepted, and parking is usually easy. Weekday hours run 11:30 AM to 8 PM, with later closing on Friday and Saturday.

Address: 21055 W Sharp St, Rock Hall, MD 21661
