๐What is Furikaki Chex Mix?
Furikaki chex mix is a party mix that's sold all over Hawaii. It usually makes an appearance around the holidays, when party mixes really come into their own.
There's so many variations of this popular snack mix. Some like to use honeycombs and sesame sticks, while others prefer wheat chex and nuts. This recipe is highly adaptable, so please feel free to customize it to your heart's content. Here's a few variations you might want to try :
- Goldfish
- Sesame Sticks
- Pecans
- Cheerios
- Fritos
- Corn Chex
- Rice Chex
- Bugles
- Honeycomb Cereal
The one thing all furikake chex mix recipes contain is an easy homemade sauce that's spread over the chex mix before baking. The sauce consists of oil or butter (in our case vegan butter), soy sauce, a sweetener and furikake seasoning.
Furikaki seasoning is typically made of toasted sesame seeds, nori, salt and sugar. Some versions contain miso or bonito flakes. Don't buy a furikaki seasoning with bonito flakes - they're made from fish. Trader Joe's sells a furikaki seasoning mix that's suitable for vegans, as do many other other places.

๐Ingredients
- Wheat Chex: What's a chex mix without chex??
- Bugles: These are a traditional addition to most furikaki chex mixes that you buy packaged in Hawaii.
- Peanuts: You can use roasted or raw peanuts.
- Soy Sauce: This adds a salty, umami flavor.
- Vegan Butter: We'll be drizzling this over the chex mix before baking at a low temperature. The vegan butter will keep the mix crispy.
- Maple Syrup: Maple Syrup adds just the right amount of sweetness. For more information on maple syrup's suitability for a vegan diet, check out Is Maple Syrup Vegan?
- Furikaki Seasoning: You can buy this online, or in the Asian section of your grocery store. Please check the ingredients on the label as some furikaki seasoning contains fish.
๐Where To Buy Furikake Seasoning
- Local Asian Grocery Stores: Many Asian grocery stores carry a variety of furikake seasoning. Check the international or Japanese section of your local grocery store.
- Online Retailers: Websites like Amazon, Walmart, and even specialty online food stores offer a wide range of furikake options. You can browse different brands and flavors to find one that suits your taste.
- Japanese or Asian Markets: Specialty Japanese or Asian markets often have a dedicated section for Japanese seasonings, including furikake. If you have a Japanese or Asian market nearby, it's worth checking out.
- Health Food Stores: Some health food stores or specialty stores that focus on organic and natural products may carry furikake seasoning, especially if they have a diverse international food selection.
- Big Chain Grocery Stores: In some larger chain grocery stores with extensive international sections, you may find furikake seasoning alongside other Japanese or Asian ingredients.
When searching online, you can simply type "furikake seasoning" into the search bar of your preferred online retailer, and you should find various options to choose from.

For an extra layer of freshness, consider placing a small piece of bread or a silica gel packet inside the container. The bread helps absorb any excess moisture, while the silica gel packet prevents the mix from becoming stale.
