Learn how to make a stylish vegan charcuterie board. They're perfect for Thanksgiving and Christmas, or even for a lazy movie night with friends.
There's nothing more satisfying that a gorgeous platter of "sharing food." And, charcuterie boards tick all the boxes. They're casual, but elegant; not only do they look the business, they naturally bring people together.
What is a Charcuterie Board?
Charcuterie (pronounced "shar-ku-tuh-ree") is the art of preparing sharing platters with contrasting textures, colors and tastes. Traditionally they consist of an array of meats, cheeses, fruits and other finger foods.
But, the great thing about these stylish boards, is that you can easily substitute your favorite vegan products for the meat and cheese. In fact, I think plant based vegan charcuterie boards are even more beautiful and colorful than their traditional counterparts.
The term "charcuterie board" has come to mean all snack boards...some other names you might find them called are smorgasbords or mezze platters.
Ingredients for Your Vegan Charcuterie Board
- Pickles: Pickles are a tangy, crunchy addition to your vegan charcuterie board. They pair well with vegan cheeses and make great finger foods. Try gherkins (tiny pickles), pickled onions or pickled mushrooms.
- Vegan Cream Cheese: Make my vegan cream cheese recipe, or buy your favorite brand.
- Sweet Fruits: Fruit adds a sweet and colorful element to your vegan charcuterie board. Popular choices include grapes, apples, mandarin oranges, and figs. You could also add fruit chutneys.
- Hummus: Hummus is an essential ingredient for a plant based charcuterie board. Try my hummus recipe, if you want to make your own. Or, switch it up and add a bowl of funky fava bean ful medames.
- Falafel: I've included a gorgeous beetroot falafel, but you can include any kind you like. Other options include vegan meats like salami and chicken.
- Crackers and Bread: Of course these are essential! Choose a variety of shapes and colors to make your board stand out. Bread can also be lightly toasted.
- Vegan Cheese Ball: These are so gorgeous! They make a showstopping centerpiece on any vegan charcuterie board. They're not as hard to make as they look. You can find my recipe here.
- Olives: I love Kalamata olives for their deep, salty taste. You could also choose green olives or dehydrated olives.
- Dried Fruit: I used cranberries for a holiday vibe, but you could also choose dried apricots, figs, cherries or raisins.
- Veggie Sticks: I used carrots because of their bright, vibrant color. You could also use cucumbers, baby corn or bell peppers.
How To Assemble Your Vegan Charcuterie Board
- Choose Your Board: Wood is always a popular choice as it's rustic and charming. You could also use slate or marble.
- Start With Your Vegan Cheese: I like to start by placing my vegan cheese on the board first and build from there.
- Add Dips and Small Bowls: Arrange your bowls in an attractive pattern and build the crackers and breads around them.
- Pair Flavors: When building your board, it's important to think about including contrasting, colors and textures. If you stick with my list of ingredients (and you don't have to), you will get a good variety of tastes, textures and colors.
- Garnish: Add a few sprigs of fresh herbs for a rustic, charming effect.
